Hey, what's with the small 20Mb update that starting going out yesterday to the S3? Was that service provider driven or directly from Samsung?

Have Telecom even got the 4.0 update out for the SGS2 yet? (Not trolling, can't find an actual answer anywhere obvious)

Dingbatt: Not having owned an iPhone I wasn't aware of the 'Carrier Pack' concept. Could that possibly work with Android? Would it involve some sort of temporary root access? I can see the upside for the telecoms in that they could promise some sort of optimisation of the stock OEM rom for their network, maybe even sneak in a couple of proprietary apps and a splashscreen, but leave the general running of the phone to the OEM. I guess it's not high on the agenda as most markets have locked handsets.

I think this is a reasonable idea, though in the case of iOS where the "carrier pack" has been done there is only one version of the OS to deal with, not several different manufacturers versions of the OS. Fragmentation may case issues.

However as I has posted before I think this whole Telco customisation is crazy as least as far as New Zealand is concerned. We are too small a market for it the be viable, this is why we have to wait so long.

As it is now putting a sim into a non branded seems to work well, I have experience with 4 different phones that all work perfectly well. The carrier settings for voice text and data update automatically. The only thing missing in my case is the "XT World app" or what ever it's called which isn't a big deal as I can still easily get my account data anyway.

So far as I'm concerned non branded handsets are the way to go.

I've had mine for about 6 weeks now..

About the same time for someone I know with a Telecom SGS2.

Well I esta-culate it like this:

The HOX was released by Telecom on the 26th of April, after HTC released the 1.28 updates, It has taken Telecom so far 74 days to configure and test these updates, so being optimistic, it takes Telecom 75 days to release an update.

I estimate the major manufactures will start releaseing their updates in about 30 days.

I also estimate Telecom have to configure and test about 10 handsets.

So average wait time should probably look somthing like 30 + ([75 * 10]/2) = 405 Days, which takes us up to 18th of August 2013.

But of course Telecom are already behind with other updates so it might be best to add another 100 days to that taking us up to 26 November 2013, although I cant help feeling Im still being optimistic.

For other Providers Id expect a reasonable release at say 30 days from manufacture, 2 * 10 to configure(2 days per device) 10 * 10 to test (10 days per device) about 30 Days server stagering which would be 150 days or 6 December 2012.
