Ha, awesome post! I look forward to getting 4.1 sometime soon after Samsung lunch it for the sgs3, but I'm sure we will have to wait months for Telecom to mess around with "browser" and call it some random Y! Tworld. . . No idea why they chose to rename such a stupid name.

I find it odd how long it takes to test an update, I mean a company who sells 10 million units is happy to push out the update, yet a small telco with a few thousand (complete guess) handsets still wants to test and tweak. . . .

But yes, don't be shy telecom :-) even let a few of us be beta testers for you, to speed up process.

a new firmware for my S2 by the end of next week would be great, but sooner would be better ;)

I completely agree. There is no need for mainline business to be on the 'bleeding edge' of mobile firmware. That is what cooked roms from the likes of XDA are for.
However, a quick run through GZ forums show just how bad Telecom are in keeping up with OEM generated firmware updates. Just look at the SGS2, Sensation and One X posts. Updates that have been operating successfully on networks around the world FOR MONTHS still haven't been pushed. These are bug fix updates, not major Android version changes. My One X is the first Telecom branded phone I have bought in ages, and it will be the last.

Please read the OP with the irony that I believe was intended. Perhaps if Telecom start working on Jelly Bean now they may only be a few months behind everybody else by the time they release it.

Has Samsung confirmed that JB is coming to the S2? As much as I would like it, I have a feeling that two major updates might be pushing our luck and their business model

Edit: To be fair, the Telecom ICS update for the S2 came out before the VFNZ one

I had a major update come through for my S2 yesterday. Not sure what it was but it was a 27 meg file and involved several restarts. Haven't noticed anything different yet though.

The issue isn't one that Telecom have a big say in.

The massive fragmentation in the Android space means that manufacturers need to firstly make the release available for their handsets, it's only then that operators can test it and make the final decision about releasing it.

So are you saying it's not Telecom's fault that everybody else has already released at least one sometimes two of the official HTC firmware updates for the One X? Including VFNZ and 2D about a month ago.

Edit: We've even offered to help beta test for them if that speeds things up.....

No. He is saying Jelly Bean won't be available at announcement as it needs to be customised for each device by manufacturers before it even goes out for Telco testing.

If the phone runs firmware that uses the protocols (GSM, UMTS, LTE etc) in a standards compliant way, and so do the networks - shouldn't there be no need for individual network testing?

This is a very relevant thread for me at the moment. I don't have a current contract and am in the market for a new personal phone (very old one is rubbish) and considering a Galaxy II or III. At the moment, I am pretty indifferent between network providers and unconcerned if I have to change numbers - anyone who knows me calls me on my work cell anyway.

Issues with plans/pricing aside, are Telecom materially worse than the other two networks (ie 2degrees or Vodafone) when it comes to updates and support? The decision will pretty much come down to purely this.

Also do any/all of them make you have a customised phone with their own apps, bookmarks and settings etc that you can't remove or revert to stock, or prevent you installing the manufacturers standard updates direct rather than their own borked versions? This is also something that would likely swing my purchase decision.

Not exactly. There are things that should be correctly configured. For example a non-Telecom handset, even though they might have the right bands could have the wrong dormancy settings.

If wrongly set these will cause excessive battery usage, frequent disconnections, slow response, etc.

Not sure what the update contained but it now says it's Android version 4.0.3. Hasn't stopped the constant rebooting itself issue I have if phone is initially restarted though. It doesn't seem to matter how many of my apps I move back to phone memory from the SD card either.
