If its blocked its blocked, end of story
Once the handset is blocked on the network it is very hard to get it removed as it is marked as stolen.
You need to go to the police and also contact seller/trademe requesting a refund.

YOU WONT GET THE PHONE WORKING.

You don't own the phone as well, if the real owner did claim it was lost and got insurance to replace it then the insurance company owns it.

I would suggest you contact the seller and tell them that the phone has been blocked and reported as stolen (reason why they get blocked)
Then request that they refund you the money and that you will be going to make a police report later that day and you will need to pass on their details as being the "seller of stolen goods"

They should get you your refund, I would also email trademe telling them what has happen.

Do not just go and get a 2 degrees sim to get it working as soon* it may stop working on 2 degrees as well.
Do the right thing, go and file a police report and ask for your refund from the seller.

We haven't read yet if it's blocked or just faulty... But yes, if it's blocked, forget it - you have to get the things fixed with the seller, not the telco.

Ok then...

There's nothing Telecom can do now. Take it to the police with the information about the seller - name, bank account, etc.

It's the right thing to do.

Geez. Yet another blacklisted phone on Trademe.... It might get to the stage where you have to supply your IMEI to TM to list.... I will never buy another handset on trademe after my experience a few years ago.

You might think you are saving a few dollars but it could end up costing a small fortune.

I think the supply of IMEI would be a great idea and for it to check on the black list that the telco's own.

Will never happen however.

Phones listings requiring IMEI would be a huge one up for TM, and solve a lot of these sorts of issues. What would stop this sort of thing becoming a requirement?

It would be a pretty cool thing to automate. Input the IMEI when listing the phone which interrogates the blacklist database. Anyway, none of this helps our OP.

It's an interesting thought..

I would suspect it may need to be a B2B style interface between TradeMe and Telecom (and/or Vodafone) since you don't really want your IMEI listed on the public site since then people would be able to list the phone as stolen if they were malicious enough and you would end up with a dead phone. Plus I doubt Telecom would want an public "Check this IMEI" as that would be fraught with abuse too.

But requiring Trademe to require it when listing a phone, then have them validate that number in the backend against both Telco's EIR to make sure the IMEI isn't blocked. Then if it is inform the seller they need to talk to the police.

I might go and talk with a few people I know in this area...

Yes but even if they did then the "seller" would know they are doing something wrong.
And trademe will be able to supply the IMEI number that was used to the buyer if it all goes pear

(as long as it's clear on how to get the IMEI number i.e. from the box/under the battery or via *#06#)

Any thoughts on the new skinny network ? and might try a new 2 degrees sim, as if I take it to the police there is the chance of losing the phone and my money.

While I hate seeing people get duped, the listing should have raised alarm bells.

This phone is only a month old reason for selling is it has corrupted software according to samsung which wouldnt be an issue if i still had the reciept it would be free ,the reciept went thru the wash so that sucks. The phone works and everything it will only accept 111 calls but shows full reception and is not a sim issue has something to do with the software but is a easy fix the phone was great i have rung around and fonefix.co.nz will update and install new software as a genral fix for $169 as i do not want to spend any more money on this phone and ive gone back to my iphone so im selling for $600 ono

Needs to go!!

If this wasn't the phone the OP purchased then someone else has been ripped off but, seriously, people need to take more care before handing over their money.

The phone is stolen, I don't think you understand - it is not your property. If you don't report it to the police, then you are receiving stolen property and are hence breaking the law.
