Not sure how that plan benefits Telecom unless you're suggesting that they charge extra for 4G?

I think he forgot to mention the part where he suggests Telecom to release 4G on Dunedin.

Will be interesting to see how comprehensive their LTE coverage is in the main centres. Vodafone's Auckland LTE coverage seems to have been growing rather slowly as of late. Still not much 4G in the West, even major commercial area Albany is not yet covered.

I have searched on the forum and couldn't see anyone ask this...so apologise if I am wrong but,....

Can someone please explain to me how come Telecom (and Vodafone) keep pushing the 700MHz spectrum when NONE of the current phones (iphones, lumias, galaxys) sold in NZ are compatible with this LTE band

What am I missing....Telecom's own site (and Vodas) advertise the phones LTE will work on and its like they failed to even look at the specs

http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/mobile/overview/4gupgrade/ (point 5....those phones WONT work on 700MHz)

I challenge you to find *any* phones that support 700Mhz today.

In 12 months time it will be a different story and once all the frequency ranges for analogue has been sold off worldwide then I suspect we will start to see a lot more phones supporting 700Mhz LTE ranges (as the carriers will be demanding phones that support it!)

camtab: so....thats my point?....if no phones support 700MHz (and there are actually phones that do...sold in US) then why are Telecom saying the phones they currently sell are supported?

Since Telecom are launching LTE along with Vodafone on 1800Mhz not 700Mhz.

Totally open to be corrected and I hope you are right (see you work at Telecom so all good)...i just dont get why the media and articles and marketing all say they are going to use the 700MHz range. So am I safe to assume they will ACTUALLY use the 1800MHz band nationwide?

I can find a handset that supports 700Mhz 4G / LTE but not for the AP 700Mhz band plan :P

The 700Mhz range is still "owned" by the RSM / Analogue TV Channels and the auction hasn't occurred yet (unless I missed something in the media).

So if I were a betting man, I would say once the auction is done and dusted, and the licenses are sold off to the highest bidder(s) then the fun game of finding suitable phones will start, then device testing in the carriers lab to get to a point that the carrier is happy to release the phone. Probably after a fair bit of tweaking for NZ's specifics with the handset manufacturer. Then going and installing 700Mhz panels tweaked to the carriers range. All of that good stuff takes time. I would suspect by mid to late next year is when things would come onto the market.
Again all my own assumptions based on what's going on in the market in general and not knowing anything specific about what is occurring within Telecom.

1800Mhz band for LTE / 4G is not going to be used nationwide as a crap load more sites would need to be built to get the coverage
