um no and no. The monthly cost is irrelevant on its own, its the value (mins/data) most of the time is greater on postpaid. And you would only commit to a fixed term for a mobile subsidy which further increases the value of that post paid plan over prepaid

In respect of bmt's comment we are talking about purchasing flagship phones on release day so cost (not value) and term commitment are relevant, if telco's were going to generate more revenue from prepay customers then surely they would sell them to everyone on day 1?

Don't get me started on why the wife had to to commit to a 24mth $49/mth plan to secure an iphone 5s on release, yes she recieved a $200 subsidy but it is costing her $240 in extra charges over the term of the contract all just to secure the phone she wanted

Telcos only did this as iPhones had no margins. And because other telcos in the market did not supply them it is a great cost to sell them on prepaid as so many would just use them on another network. When the 5S come out, Telecom let customers have the phone on an open term plan and defer the payments over 12 or 24 months. No contract required. I did this with my own wife's phone on launch day, pretty good considering you could pay the remaining payments in full and jump to 2degrees. I guess they weren't to concerned with this.

So I've entered my telecom code and cancelled my premium sub. Spotify says I'll revert to free account on x date. What happens on that date - I carry on with premium right?

There's not even a terms and conditions link. So basically if they're actually not offering it to you with EVERY plan $59 and over, the Advertising Standards Authority would like to have a word with them about that, as it would be false advertising.

I already pay for Premium and looked at going from the $19 plan to the $29 plan to save a few dollars. After I saw the only difference was more minutes, I don't think I'll bother.

I hardly use the minutes that I have. Data is king, and is always the last thing to increase sadly.

So I checked with Telecom. No, only Ultra plans are eligible - which means that their webpage is indeed misleading, and needs to be fixed ASAP.

The ASA would most definitely disagree with you (and on principle, I do too), and for a customer in an existing term contract the only eligible plans cost $10 more than their legacy equivalent (for some reason, open term plans are $10 cheaper than term contracts).

And as to why it's a big deal? It's not, it's the principle. NZers are all too good at letting big companies get away with mistakes and outright lies in their advertising because "don't really see how it's a big deal". Now, the wording is probably just a simple mistake that they can fix, so they'll probably go ahead and do that if it's brought to their attention;or they'll just offer it to everyone on a $59+ plan - that's their call. But simply ignoring it should not be OK.

"for some reason, open term plans are $10 cheaper than term contracts" well pretty simple, no hardware/account credit. Its a huge cost saving for the telco when people bring there phones from other networks, hence the incentive to do so.

If you're on contract, call telecom and say you "want to speak to retentions before you disconnect". Tell the retentions agent you want to switch to an ultra plan or you'll leave.

I done that when I got a $100+ bill Because they didn't tell me I used my text allowance. So the agent switched me to the equivilant ultra plan with unlimited texts. She also gave me 6months of a 1gb data add on to cover the additional text charges on that bill which I still had to pay. But I think so long as you Dont want to switch down a plan it shouldn't be a problem I guess.

Well I was under the impression I would get a text notification like you do with your data allowance. I had just switched to an android phone at the time and was used to I message so rarely sent 200normal messages.

I had been with telecom since I got a 4S and imesssage changed my text needs alot. Before that I was between Vodafone or 2deg and never had this issue with the stupidly large text packs. The pack I got when I signed my 24month term for my iPhone 5 only had 500txts I recall.

I still Dont unserstand why they Dont have a text alliance notification system. I would have thought the data one would be more difficult to set up infact.

That's the catch. The Ultra plan in my tier costs $69, though the website also allows me to go down a tier to the $49 plan - which is below their cutoff. So I have to move to a more expensive plan, because the same priced plan is only available on Open Term which I cannot switch to. That said, that plan has 250MB more data, which in theory should mean I don't end up buying data extras as much, and the $12.99 I no longer have to pay for Spotify sort of negates that $10 extra.

schadenfreude, yup I know what that means without having to google it first.

Really? Then isn't whitecd using it backwards, isn't he taking about freudenschade?

I'm assuming he was talking in respect of the post-paid customers because I don't really see any prepaid customers feeling good because the postpaids are missing out. They are feeling good just because they are getting something extra. It's the postpaids that are feeling bad because someone else is benefiting and not them.
