hehe para, i actually thought the same when i saw tony's pic, i was wondering.. it looks smaller and im sure it didnt look that small when i was handling it in the telecom store lol but maybe it was because i was holding it in my right hand and if held in the left it will always look smaller? Hey all. I'm a first time poster on Geekzone but have read the blog frequently for a while now.

Bought myself a Touch yesterday and have a few things I wanted to sort out.. any help much appreciated.

1. Is there anyway to get that annoying beep from going away that happens saying "message sent", without being on silent.. becuase I still want the phone to beep when a new text comes?

2. Tried to sync my Gmail with the phone. I can send emails from my account from the phone, but when it checks for new emails to download to the phone it doesn't find any, despite me making sure there are new ones in my inbox.. not sure why this is happening? Would much perfer to be able to check email doing this rahter than having to use the internet explorer each time!

3. Anyone have any links for apps that work on the Touch? That is once I manage to install whatever was on the CD.. keeps saying I need a new version of Flash, despite already having updated.. annoying

Otherwise, to anyone else considering this phone, it is amazing and the perfect upgrade I sought from my Treo 650.

maskamaru: Hey all. I'm a first time poster on Geekzone but have read the blog frequently for a while now.

Welcome to the forums!

You came to the right place...

1. Is there anyway to get that annoying beep from going away that happens saying "message sent", without being on silent.. becuase I still want the phone to beep when a new text comes?

Overkill for your one problem, but I use phoneAlarm from pocketMax to do lots of things, including suppressing sent message alerts.

Overall I found Gmail on my mobile to be relatively unreliable. I have a crazy system of forwarding from my domain email accounts to Gmail, then back to a seperate email account on my domain (This gives me awesome free spam filtering) and then I just use IMAP with my domain account (Which works perfectly). Screwy, but if you get the flow of whats happening, its actually really good.

3. Anyone have any links for apps that work on the Touch? That is once I manage to install whatever was on the CD.. keeps saying I need a new version of Flash, despite already having updated.. annoying

Check out the Geekzone software store. There is a little freeware, mostly commercial stuff. Other sites too, there are literally tens of thousands of applications that should run on the touch - certainly anything made for WM5/ WM6 and *most* stuff for WM2003.

Otherwise, to anyone else considering this phone, it is amazing and the perfect upgrade I sought from my Treo 650.

Agreed.

Thanks for the help Tony. Will get onto phone alarm soon. Hopefully it will give me the ability to customise my LED as I could on my Treo.

The Gmail thing is bugging me though, will have to do some searching and see if I'm the only one having problems. Will have to give it another try tomorrow.

Does anyone use windows messenger from their PDA? If so, how many MBS does it churn? Am wanting to set it up, but need to consider upgrading the data plan first!

Hi

I am keen to buy a Touch as we can use the windows mobile to track hives etc What do you suggest so it can be synced with Microsoft Access

I was wondering about battery life when using the mp3 player my Sanyo 5600 only lasts for about 3-4 hours when we get sick of listening  to the radio

Regards Pete

Is there any way for the Okta Touch to access the internet other than through the expensive data charges which Telecom imposes? (Telecom's only phone with WiFi is the HTC Titan, which is also their most expensive phone... hmm...) For instance my laptop has Bluetooth, so could I access the internet with the Touch through the laptop? But what if I'm not at home and can't use the laptop, does such a thing as a WiFi Bluetooth device exist? (i.e. a little Bluetooth device that can access the WiFi network... or alternatively via the mini-usb could attach WiFi? What are the options?)

$50 for a gig is pretty good. You should have seen prices a coupla years ago!

No other real options. Bluetooth is doable, but you would soon tire of it. That mini-USB wont host a device, so out of luck there. There are bluetooth APs around, I had one here for testing a couple of years ago, it was ok.

Remember Bluetooth generally is only reliable to about 10 metres

lol, ah yeah it is "cheap" compared to that. But that is only relatively speaking. I can afford the phone itself without too much trouble, but spending $50 a month (plus $10 for txting and whatever else I'd spend on calls) means in just one year I'd have spent more than the phone itself cost! So when I look at it that way I don't think I'll be springing for a data plan just yet. Though perhaps in another year or two, when my salary has gone up and/or data charges have gone down then I will.

Also, I pressume it is easily possible with WM6 to completely disable the access so I don't get hit by any data charges from Telecom? (yet still being able to make calls and send txts etc, as 3G is on a different network from that)

All Windows Mobile devices will access the Internet from your laptop or PC when connected to ActiveSync. If you connect to ActiveSync via Bluetooth you will automatically have Internet Access. This is the cheapest way.

Yes, which is why I see it as a possibly usable solution at home? But would have to find something different when away from home, though it seems that doesn't exist. Oh well.

I just got the touch yesterday. Now I got some dust inside the screen now, don't know why. And the text entry a but tricky to use at ye beginning. I think I will get used to that soon. The screen require strong pressure to activate. Finger scrolling works in lots of situations, but in PIE finger scrolling doesn't work well, because it scroll the web pages too fast. Opera mobile 8.65 work flawlessly. Screens is one of the best ever seen. So bright and vivid color. Programs run very fast due to the large memory. I haven't put the screen protector on now.sometimes there will be some error due to wrong spell of the internal error. I just installed the touch pal keyboard, and I found out that this one is much more responsive than the built in 20 key keyboard, and superior to the original one. The signal is pretty good in my place in the fringe of the littLe town. Rubber coating is very nice. Very small and incredibly light. Built in picture viewer is very good. Zoom in and out and pan is also finger activated, very nice program.

I have been Touch'd now for about a week but not totally convinced I will stay. Texting is cool but not as easy as the Titan (using keyboard 2 handed) and texting is my primary use. Also when in the text messages screen I would rather have 'new' as an option rather than 'delete'. Is there any software that will allow me to go straight to create 'new' text from home screen or even text message screen?
