I'm not permitted to tell you exactly what happened, but check out which recent posts I have +1ed and which recent posts with the wild, incorrect assumptions that I have avoided +1ing.

[edit: Heh - just realised, unlike FB, you can't see who +1ed things. So anyway, I +1ed Jase's comment and didn't +1 anyone else that has posted on this thread today :-) ]

The issue was nothing to do with congestion.

I've had very low resolution and buffering with YouTube on my Apple TV4 for the past week.

Just tried it now. No buffering and resolution is back to normal.

Thanks for fixing it.

I logged a ticket with big pipe and Praveen has advised their customers are also having issues and their technical team is actively working on it with no ETA.

Big Pipe has nothing at all to do with Spark so any such issues are unlikely to be related. It's a completely separate ISP network.

Are you sure :) I just spoke to spark regarding a routing issue from spark mobile to a big pipe up address they had to change a firewall rule ;) also I referenced this post to big pipe

Big Pipe is a complete standalone entity that has it's own upstream, interconnects, BNG's and backhaul across NZ. From an ISP perspective it shares nothing - and many would argue it's very silly that they did reinvent the wheel when they already had a perfectly good wheel they could have used much like Skinny using the Spark mobile network.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Bigpipe (which is a brand of Spark, not a standalone company and reports through to Spark CFO) uses Spark for its upstream and for its CDN nodes which is why if Spark had a problem then it would also affect Bigpipe. Bigpipe also use Spark's backbone network for its transit across NZ. It made sense for Bigpipe to build their own BNG infrastructure as it was probably cheaper than building a CG-NAT setup across Sparks significant BNG Network. I dont believe Bigpipe has any of its own IP Interconnects, they use 100% Spark - could be looked up with an AS check.

Skinny on the other hand has quite a lot of its own Network Stack and built similar to a Spark MVNO, but is pretty much the same model network wise as Bigpipe.

Youtube is 100% again , but....

Vimeo & Watchme.co.nz are now worse than the old youtube issue.
Both unwatchable, same issues as youtube had previously , only much worse .
frown

Any one else having issues with those 2 ?

I am on leave today but I might have a quick look. I have to be 100% clear though that the youtube issue was a specific issue related to the delivery of the traffic from Google (That we discovered and fixed) - even though these symptoms with Vimeo and watchme might look similar, there's no chance it's the same issue...

Do you have a specific video URL link from those sites you can confirm has issues? Are the issues during peak time only or 24*7? Are other sites giving issues when the playback issue occurs? Do you get much worse national and international speedtest results when you have playback issues? What's your access type? etc etc etc etc

Cheers - N

One of the major submarine cables out of Sydney (PPC-1) has been out for the last month or so, Google also have capacity on the other two cables (AJC and Southern Cross) but I have not heard of any degradation or impact to Google services including YouTube.

I suspect it may be a peering issue like last time or a Bigpipe specific issue (they seem to be experiencing rapid growth in subscribers recently).
