Having never trusted the Yahoo move, I only use POP and SMTP with outlook as the client. So will wait and see what the new settings are before doing anything.
lyonrouge: From what I can determine, the "permission" process is the only way they can synchronise passwords with the existing service, as it appears everyone has to "reset" their password as part of the process?
I think it's just good housekeeping by Spark/Xtra. I followed the link when you give them permission, then skipped the password change. I had already changed it after the Yahoo hack just to be on the safe side so couldn't be bothered changing it again right now.

A great time to transition off ISP provided email to something independent
Gmail , Outlook.com soooo many choices
Agreed, no reason to use anything else.

richms:Considering yahoo sat on their hack knowledge for so long and then also were busted pre-scanning email for some US govt thing, yeah deserved dislike of them.

As they say, the only crime is being caught doing it. I have no doubt the other main free email providers are helping the US govt.

What's wrong if they pre scanned email for the US Govt? I'm not a terrorist so doesn't bother me and it may well offer help for intended victims
When I hear that excuse it really saddens me that people think their privacy is worthless.
So you won't mind the govt listening to your phones calls, checking your bank accounts, intercepting your wireless traffic and internet in order to save us from terrorism?
Back on the topic... I received a letter from Spark regarding this move, even though my Xtra email account was closed many, many years ago.

The Govt can listen to phone calls via using the law to ask a Telco to disclose. A teller can check your bank account. You want to use the CGA to protect your purchase, you want the Govt to have access to free trade for all our benefits, but protecting against terrorism by viewing your emails that you send to your mate in Matamata is a problem?
If you want that privacy, then EVERYTHING is private. You cannot have it both ways. Too much P.C. and too little common sense.

I agree. There are a mere few global, public email providers. There are many many more smaller email providers. Being IT, they will or can have issues.
If there is an email provider that is guaranteed from issues, cool. But the reality is many of us don't care as it wont affect us. Email is very reliable, like anything, issues can
happen. Thats why we have warranties or SLA's or T+C's. Its just email. AS long as its not lost in the ether, I'm fine with that. My income, purchases, legal issues, etc, etc are all mainly not private, someone knows, especially the Govt. But as I don't need to hide under a rock, with a Smith and Wesson at the ready, I'm ok with that. If I was a substance dealer as mentioned in NZ news. or a terrorist, I might be worried, and I'm very ok with that. Its about balance.

Like you I had one of those accounts years ago which I logged into once just to check it. Never touched it again as Yahoo had always had a bad reputation with email security. When Xtra moved to them I knew it would all end in tears.
As they say, when a product/service is free, you are the product/service.
