Talkiet:

Thanks everyone. We have found and addressed the issue and all servers are currently performing as expected.

FYI, as part of the RWC capacity build we are replacing our DNS infrastructure with a more distributed platform, more capacity and using some new functions to support better CDN balancing. The current system will be retired shortly.

Cheers - N

Just to be clear (as I am sure people will ask) the current platform is distributed and redundant.

I'm not at liberty to go into the nature of the failures experienced tonight, but rest assured that this has the highest visibility and we are taking this very seriously.

What was the cause of the issue tonight (if you're allowed to say)? Upstream provider or related to work on the current platform?

Sorry, that's not the sort of information we share publicly. It wouldn't even make much sense at all unless you were intimately familiar with parts of our network.

Just what you needed on a Sunday night (not!).

Noticed my connection go offline at about 630 last night, logged into my router, and it was telling me in the GUI to set DNS manually (TP Link). I rebooted ONT and Router, and set 8.8.8.8 which fixed it. I ran the diagnostics in the Bigpipe App, and whether a coincidence or not, it seemed to come right at the exact same time. Changed it back at about 730 and it was all OK again.

Bigpipe, Static IP, Fibre.

Running BP app would have made no differance and would have said all is OK with your connection.

Folks are using their ISP/RSP DNS servers in this day and age? Amazing..

Try setting your router to use any of these:

Cloudflare 1.1.1.1

Quad9 9.9.9.9

Google 8.8.8.8

If you value your privacy Get an ASUS router, install the Merlin firmware and configure it use DNS over TLS. All your DNS queries will be encrypted and thus unreadable to your ISP/Govt/Cybercriminals or just use a decent VPN (or both).

Incidentally, if you want to check the performance of a variety of DNS servers to determine the fastest/most reliable for YOUR location get dnsperfttest & run it for some very informative results.

https://github.com/cleanbrowsing/dnsperftest

Alternatively just use dig e.g. dig @8.8.8.8 geekzone.co.nz (replace 8.8.8.8 with any other DNS you wish to observe)

Cheers
