Hibino:

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I did boot my desktop to Ubuntu through USB doing the tests but there is no change.

The surface dock is connected to surface book with it's special connector(I think all surface got this connector since gen 4), it has 1 gigabit ethernet + 2 displayport + 4 usb3 so I guess it should have enough bandwidth to handle a gigabit network.

I just tried different server locations as suggested:

Dunedin 2degrees: 124mpbs down, 100mbps up

Wellington Spark: 136mbps down, 201mbps up

Wellington Vodafone: 230mbps down, 114mpbs up

Auckland Spark: 126mpbs down, 183mbps up

Auckland Vodafone: 130mbps down, 131mpbs up

Auckland MyRepublic: 336mpbs down, 138mbps up(wait...)

Auckland 2degrees: 934mbps down, 151mpbs up(huh??????)

Sydney Vodafone: 238mbps down, 81mpbs up

Sydney 2degrees: 814mbps down, 76mpbs up(what???)

From the results I guess the fibre is gigabit although it only can achieve that on 2 of the 2degrees servers? So the problem is Spark's speedtest server is overloaded then...

I can guarantee you that the Spark Speedtest servers are not overloaded. Given the numbers you have shown above are all over the place I still suspect weirdness in your network or PC setup.

Cheers - N

That's weird, the test is done on desktop and nothing is touching the cable/router/ont. And I tried several times only can get good speed to the above 2 2degrees servers.

I got a friend coming after work with his laptop that got gigabit ethernet, I'll do the tests to different servers on his laptop with only 1 laptop connected to the HG659b using the ethernet cable supplied from the HG659b, with no any wifi devices connected.

For comparison to a known good PC on a Spark gig connection (admittedly in Chch on Enable) see my results below:

Dunedin 2degrees: 124mpbs down, 100mbps up (NG 616down, 75down - bouncing through Akl at 42ms)

Wellington Spark: 136mbps down, 201mbps up (NG 925/388)

Wellington Vodafone: 230mbps down, 114mpbs up (NG 932/193)

Auckland Spark: 126mpbs down, 183mbps up (NG 890/284)

Auckland Vodafone: 130mbps down, 131mpbs up (NG 137/138 - That looks shaped to me)

Auckland MyRepublic: 336mpbs down, 138mbps up(wait...) (NG 906/512)

Auckland 2degrees: 934mbps down, 151mpbs up(huh??????) (NG 911/202)

Sydney Vodafone: 238mbps down, 81mpbs up (NG 899/78)

Sydney 2degrees: 814mbps down, 76mpbs up(what???) (NG 896/72)

And CHCH Spark - (NG 934/532)

If I had to guess, I would say that somehow you are dropping a few packets in the early part of most tests and this is crippling the results, but depending on the particular server TCP stack configs, you might be getting the odd lucky test where it's all working.

I would still say it's MOST likely to be an issue on your PC - given that the odd good test is showing the line is configured correctly.

My speedtest results above aldso show there's no load issues on the speedtest servers (Although something is up either with The AKL VF server, or my path to it)

Cheers - N

A laptop with a gig ethernet port IS NOT NECESSARILY GOOD ENOUGH. I have seen plenty of gigE ports that can't sustain gig throughput. It's definitely useful to try another machine, but don't assume a machine with a gig port can do gig.

Sorry my friend couldn't make it yesterday so we did the tests today. He's using a mac book pro with a lighting->ethernet adapter, like the surface dock, which has more than enough bandwidth to deal with gigabit network. Gigabit networks is not that hard to achieve, back 6 years ago at my parents house an i3 desktop can download files 50~80mb/s(well, hit the hardware limit with hard disk drive).

I asked him to do 3 tests at home to show that the laptop can handle gigabit. Here is the 3 test results:

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8429072268 937mbps down, 256mpbs up

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8429075087 937mbps down, 325mbps up

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8429077298 876mpbs down, 272mbps up

And here are the results we just did at my place, each server is tested 3 times:

To CHCH Spark:

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8431891319 205mbps down, 307mbps up

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8431893444 210mpbs down, 297mbps up

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8431894956 214mbps down, 304mbps up

To AKL Spark:

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8431910691 174mbps down, 156mbps up

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8431911721 194mpbs down, 182mbps up

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8431912864 193mbps down, 162mbps up

To AKL 2Degrees

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8431896775 902mbps down, 149mbps up

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8431898310 901mpbs down, 144mbps up

https://www.speedtest.net/result/8431899490 909mpbs down, 113mbp up

I do have screenshots showing machine serial number and MAC address to prove tests is done on the same laptop.

So, at my place, using 2 different machines, all proven work on gigabit, are failing get gigabit internet except to AKL 2degrees server. Although there is a pinned topic says Spark is not doing any sharping, but I do doubt this is some sort of sharping and Spark forgot to include the 2degrees server?

Go read the sticky post about the Spark shaping. It's still correct.

This is odd I grant you and I have had some other people anecdotally report similar (odd results to Spark Speedtest servers but fine to others). However whenever we've tried to replicate this we have been unable to do so in a controlled test.

Having checked out the CPU, RAM and Network utilisation of the Speedtest servers from the server all the way through to your BNG, there are no areas of concern. Clearly the fact you can get good results to AKL (The uploads are all too slow though, even then ones with your friends machine) means there's no actual network congestion or issues.

Are you able to confirm what sort of results your machine can regularly and reliably get to the 2D server in Akl?

If you're comfortable with it, would you be open to a remote control session to run some extra tests at some stage (I'd like to test against an iPerf server to take out the Ookla Speedtest factor)... AGain note I am not an official Spark rep, you'd have to trust me from my rep on here. (And you'd be able to see the screen at all times). If so, drop me a PM.

Cheers - N

Yes I can confirm that my desktop can get 900mbps down everytime to AKL 2D server but none of the others.

I do want to figure out what's wrong with my internet, I will PM you now.

Download a file from adobe or a game from origin. If you get 50MB/s (400Mbps/s) that proves your speeds are higher than speedtest. Use two computers to download and if both get 50MB/s then you have at least 800Mbps

Do that first

Thanks - I'l check that now. To be clear, I don't think there's anything wrong with your internet. I suspect that more granular testing will show no issues, but I am keen to look at it.

Since I have 900mbps to 2D servers so I actually do have a gigabit fibre. Talkiet is trying to help me find out what's wrong with my connection to Sparks servers.

Thank you for all the work you've done helping me figure out the issue today. I hope there will be some reason that's not caused by my faithful & hardworking machine.
