Is there a problem with the Smart Modem?

I haven't had a problem with it on Spark. Is there something I don't know about ?

Does anyone know if it's possible to sign up to this offer and request a future date for activation?

I already have fibre with another provider, have to give 1 months notice in the next few days as currently paid in advance for period 22 Oct to 22 Nov. Contract term ends 22nd Nov.

So ideally I would provide notice to existing provider prior to 22nd Oct, so not charged for 22nd Nov to 22nd Dec, and would request Skinny connection to be active from say 20th Nov.

Is that feasible? or is it not possible to request a future date for connection?

Thanks

You definitey can. Like you, I had to give 30 days notice (to Slingshot), so I chose the ‘future connection’ option when signing up with Skinny and selected November 17.

November 20 should be fine.

Yeah you can schedule switch over up to 2 months in advance.

My contract with Spark ends 15 Nov but the billing period ends Dec 1 so I scheduled my switch over date for Dec 2nd...

Already gave Spark Notice a few weeks ago letting them know i planning of changing.

Tried to switch to Stuff Fibre last week, but they messed up and couldn't switch, despite multiple promises.

This deal is so much better, just signed up!

Stuff have come back to me saying my bills due Monday so if I can get skinny to activate then I can just cut over. Not sure I'll get the smart router delivered by then.

I think I should be able to work a interim solution as I have and old orcon and Vodafone router along with the Asus from stuff and tenda mw6 I could turn on to routing mode, surely one of the damn things will work even if skinny don't support me for the few days 🤣

Anyone using their own router for Skinny fixed line broadband?  What is the setting (e.g. VLAN on or off, PPPOE vs IPoE/DHCP etc)?

The latest promotion is a nice offer, but not too keen to use the provided router.  Hate to switch to them and then find out I have to use their provided routers (e.g. do they use MAC address prefix or range to check you are using the provided router?).

Thanks.

Skinny do not prevent you using a 3rd party router.  I'm not saying that they support it, they just don't actively prevent it.

PPPoE with vlan tagging off.  PPP username can only contain characters you'd find in an email address (no funky characters).

Thank you @cbrpilot and @razor2000nz.  This is great news.

Is anyone able to confirm, I have submitted a request to my current provider as per my one months notice. Date of disconnection is 22nd Nov. Currently have gigabit fibre and signing up to gigabit with Skinny.

Trying to avoid being without internet for too many days, can I request my Skinny connection date to be a few days prior, or must current provider have processed disconnection before new connection can be provisioned? I.e could I make the requested Skinny connection date say 19th Nov, or does it need to be 22nd Nov or later?

Thanks

You did it backwards. Disconnect order will block connect order.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I’ve actually done it the other way around, submitted the connection order with Skinny for 18th Nov. But my current contract with existing provider runs until 22nd Nov, so when I phoned existing provider they told me that the new provider wouldn’t be able to provide connection from 18th Nov because existing connection is still active?

I’m not fussed about cost, just trying to avoid unnecessary downtime without a connection in place.

Really tempted by this as currently on BigPipe 100/100 for $89 for the last few years, but like others as soon as I mentioned to the wife about changing isp she said no way. When we moved house last year our fibre move got screwed up and had 4 days outage, so now with 2 wfh adults and 2 school from home kids, taking it down would have me sleeping on the couch.

Also don’t want to use another modem as have a nice Ubiquiti setup at home.

I placed my order on Monday October 18 and the Skinny modem just arrived this morning. From Manukau to a rural Waikato address.
