So a word of warning for those using older UniFi Security Gateways - just stay on PPPoE.

Reason for this is there is a longstanding bug that’ll expose your whole router to the internet if you just change from PPPoE to DHCP. You’ll need to fully reset your router and reprovision if you want to do this and it isn’t worth it as it can do line rate PPPoE anyway.

Many other routers (like the RB4011 @shindig) can also do line rate PPPoE and I would keep it using this for reliability - there is no point changing to IPoE here. Same with the Spark Smart Modems and almost every other router.

Some routers, like Fortigates don’t have hardware accelerated PPPoE so can benefit here. But for the majority of other routers out there, there isn’t really any benefit for over PPPoE.

…until Hyperfibre is involved.

Do you have an estimate when this is available on Bigpipe in Christchurch?

Does tomorrow work for you? :)

Any word regarding Skinny in Wellington (Lower Hutt specifically) when it'll make an appearance?

Don't want to put specific dates on it at this point.  Should be within the next month though (or thereabouts).

After 10 days of running on DHCP Ive switched back to PPP. I was getting the internet just stop once or twice a day until I restarted the router (Deco X55). Never had that problem before and havent had it since I switched the settings back.  Switching from PPP to DHCP took a good 10-20 mins the first time but switching from DHCP to PPP was instant.  Nothing makes you change settings ASAP quite like having to get up to turn off all the lights..... No biggie, all working (on original settings) now.

That's frustrating, I've had no issue with either an Edgerouter or UDM Pro Max using DHCP.. has been just as stable on DHCP as it was PPPoE

Trying to switch to DHCP from PPPoE but whilst the internet is up now, I can’t connect with the UCG Max

Are there any particular settings for Unifi. Loud Gateway consoles I should be using other than  DHCP IPv4 and VLAN 10 ?

Thanks mate,

Been banging my head against the Asus reconnect taking ages for a while.
Did the change to DHCP (Automatic IP in Asus), took maybe 10 minutes to reconnect.

As a test I rebooted the router, still took maybe 15 mins to reconnect. Is this expected?

This was a thing for Quic users with Asus routers, unsure if this will help (copy/paste from the Quic website):

If you are using an ASUS router and struggling to get connectivity, or can only get intermittent connectivity, check that the below option “Enable VPN + DHCP Connection” in your WAN settings is set to “No“.

This option causes your router to try and attempt to connect via your existing PPPoE and also a DHCP dialer, which then causes instability of your connection.
This can be further confirmed to be the cause by loading the service in your account and a dual dialer warning being displayed.

Yeah, interestingly I did disable the setting. Didn't appear to make a huge difference.

Any case it's no longer available once I set the auth to DHCP.

Yes that setting does disappear when you move to DHCP.

A router reboot with DHCP should result in minimal downtime - i.e. it should try to get it's lease again when it has finished rebooting - which will be granted straight away.

Let me know if you would like me to take a look at it.

Any word on when it'll be available for Skinny customers soon?
