Most of the phones are very high end phone. With less than 300 bucks you probably won't be lucky to get one....... Unless telecom wanna reduce the price. But if it does, telecom will go bankrupt sooner because they have invested millions on the network. Of course they want a quick return to the shareholders as they are losing money and market share now

Telecom New Zealand has already announced they will have some handsets that will be launched worldwide with their new network.

Back to your first question in this thread:

Telecom New Zealand has an excellent band. Handsets that work for Telstra and AT&T are very welcome here (if unlocked). As I wrote just above Telecom New Zealand will release some Windows Mobile handsets.

Go on. Buy it. Then in another month or so you will see what Telecom is offering and you will have an AT&T-branded handset with lots of locked configurations. I know, I have one.

i dont see the rush.. if anything wont these parallel imported handsets become cheaper to buy for us (if purchasing in NZ anyway) as more come in since they wont be limited to vodafone use anymore?

plus i imagine we will start seeing handsets instore towards the end of next month.

Yes. Telecom is going bankrupt at some stage. Much sooner if they lower handset prices too.

Telecom are also losing money, and do not post profits.

Where the hell is this (incorrect) information coming from?

Telecom handsets are and will be customerised to maximise the network, and although an imported phone may work if problems occurs then you would have no support as they will not offer support for non telecom sourced handsets this includes network problems

99% of Vodafone handsets will *NOT* work on Telecom's new network.

With a few possible exceptions close to 100% of Telecom devices will work on Vodafone however none of these will deliver you nationwide 3G coverage on Vodafone.

It's still very much a case of handset incompatability between both networks and will probably be that way for at least another year until we start seeing devices that have support for both 850 and 900Mhz WCDMA. Currently there are no commercially available devices that offer this.

The 6-8 phones advertised are aimed at the business end of the market however they will have phones for all parts of the market, if you take the advertising in telecom store where you get a voucher for $149 that can be used for a new phone ( at no cost ) on the new network you can then assume they will have phones starting from a $149 price point.

Xt is actually a hsUpa network. Download 3.6m, up 1.4m. I m not sure whether Some nokia handsets like e71 or n96 support hsupa. Looks like not many handsets support it then.....

I thought I'd read somewhere that it's HSPA+. I'm sure that HSDPA phones will work though, as many people have confirmed that iPhones work very well.

Remember, the rest of the world with competition gets phones like this for free on a decent plan on a contract, so since NZ now will have competition, there is no reason not to expect that to happen here. I wouldnt be rushing into getting an expensive handset right now.

Also there are plenty of cheap UMTS850 capable handsets available - the nokia 6600 is given away in the states - its an aweful fliptop phone but its 850 and cheap so there is not a shortage of phones the can give away. If you look at the value of the ones they were giving away on CDMA then you can see there is heaps of umts handsets within that pricerange.

Nope.

They're giving customers either a $149 or $299 voucher for (or to put towards) a new phone, depending on how they're contracted.
