After the announcement from the Alcatel-Lucent APAC VP - Classic Hits DJs were making jokes along the lines of that after the Rainbow Warrior, and French Rugby player Basteraux feigning getting beat-up last year in Wellington - why are TNZ trusting a 'French' company to build their Network.

What's been interesting with the latest issues was the naming of ALu in most releases as 'working with TNZ' to resolve the issues. Releases in regards to December's outage IIRC only mention that 'Telecom' were working on the issues.

Evidently TNZ are keen on ALu to publicly feel some of the heat that they are under.

Paulthagerous:
eXDee: I hear plenty of complaints about the R100/R150 phones, not only failing and being faulty, but being just plain terrible.

Never heard of this R150 phone you are talking about, and I also work in a store that sells mobiles.

Whoops i meant the R6. No idea where i got 150 from, i just thought 'the one above the r100' and somehow returned 150 as a number.

Alcatel-Lucent announces new head of New Zealand Business
New General Manager Jyoti was formerly the general manager of Alcatel-Lucent's Next Generation Networks product unit.

Had a chuckle. Is this a coincidence, as it's to the left of the BDFL photo on my screen. Geekzone news.

Was the former general manager responsible for the XT mess or partly responsible? Any they get a promotion. Only in NZ.

Can someone help me.

Alcatel-Lucent has announced the appointment of Jyoti Mahurkar-Thombre as head of its New Zealand operations, effective 8th March 2010. Jyoti, who will be based in New Zealand, will report to Rajeev Singh-Molares, president of Alcatel-Lucent in the Asia Pacific region.

Jyoti?s position was previously held by Steve Lowe, who has decided to leave the company. In the coming weeks, Steve and Jyoti will closely collaborate to smoothly transition the leadership role.

?Jyoti has more than 20 years telecommunications industry experience, and has driven next generation network rollouts for many of the largest and most progressive operators in the Asia Pacific region and around the world,? said Rajeev Singh-Molares. ?She understands our customers? priorities and we are looking forward to her personal contribution to serving our New Zealand customers.?

Jyoti was formerly the general manager of Alcatel-Lucent?s Next Generation Networks product unit. Prior to this role, Jyoti was vice president of Bell Labs, where she managed projects from initial concept to product release. Jyoti joined the company in 1988 where she held a variety of product management and research and development positions.

Jyoti received a Master of Science degree in engineering management, with a certificate in telecommunications, from Northwestern University in 2000.

Rajeev Singh-Molares the APAC president has only recently taken over from Sean Dolan. Quite a bit of movement in APAC it would seem. Both Singh-Molares and Jyoti are former Lucent staff, IIRC.

harrylin: Everybody I know here talks and knows about XT outage. So the brand damage has been huge recently. I don't know how telecom can fix it. It's been a big failure. I won't be moving to vodafone because xt is superior to vodafone in signal strength and speed. But, ordinary people won't care about 3G, they care about txting and receiving calls. What they need is signal and sending and receiving txts. Business people are the ones who need to be well looked after, and they use lots of service and spend a lot of money on mobile bills. So the main target should be business people rather than general public. Young people only care about txting, they can't afford to switch carriers and they don't spend much on calls. So use some incentives to attract more business users back.

I'd dispute a generalised claim that XT is superior to Vodafone in signal strength & speed as I have several friends here in Christchurch on XT ,who (when XT's been working properly) have not had the same signal strength or speed as I have Vodafone.

Getting back on topic,  XT seems to now be so badly damaged it will be impossible to recover properly from that.

I believe the only way forward for Telecom is to get the network working reliably and then re-launch with a new name,  possibly using an approach along the lines of, "we've listened to our customers and we've re-built our network to ensure all customers have the fastest, most reliable network in the world"....

Another bad news day for XT....
Not good for them or their customers, and I've genuine sympathy for them all. Still if they can keep the hearses circling a few more months it'll be a solid network with plenty of capacity.... and then will come the inducements.

Debating the merits of any one network, speed and signal wise, is almost destructively pointless. Because the only thing you can count on is that it will change... as load changes, as the environment changes, and as technology changes.

You're better to simply find the network that gives you the services you want where you want to use it and go with that. If you're lucky you'll get some reliability as well.

The good thing about these outages, is that in the long run, they will end up with an even better system. Probably doesn't help their broadband plans with getting the NZ governments contract.

I hear on the radio, that Vodafone have also got problems, with people not receiving txts, so it isn't just telecom who have got problems tonight. However the NZ media do have a field day bashing telecom. A bit of the tall poppy syndrome, as we don't like people being successful, and love to rip them down.

Are you comparing it with VF3g or just seeing the GSM network when you are comparing strength?

XT has constantly delivered better signal level around Auckland when compared to VF's 2100 MHZ network.

It just sucks that it breaks all the time for you guys south of taupo..

The company I work for has been going nearly 40 years, I started there 13 years ago, and have a bit of clout now. They have been telecom customers from day 1.
My boss is actually now considering changing to another provider, not just cellphones - everything.
broadband, landlines, mobiles after too many outages.
I have thrown my company phone away, and told them, ring me on my 021 if you can.

IMHO Telecom have done too little too late, they have always been second best, and always will be.
Dont get me wrong - I'm a very tolerant person, but enough is enough.
They deserve everything they get.
I feel sorry for the techs on the front line fixing the problems, but have no sympathy for management.
One of (many of) the stupidest things our government has ever done was selling it off.

I don't think they should re-brand XT, they should just be upfront, honest, admit they screwed up and that they have fixed it, lower some prices or offer other some incentive for people to stay

Why is there so many 'load issues' at the moment when the network should be able to handle a lot more

It's off topic, however...

I was comparing 3G with 3G (apples with apples).

As I said, I was disputing a generalised claim that XT is superior to Vodafone, aside from anything else everyone recognises that in some areas one network might have better coverage than another network.

No way they can fix it. They might be able to keep current users by offering a royal compensation package, but no-one in their right mind will sign up now.
