You're right, it is disappointing and by no means was it an easy decision, many options were considered/explored/tested before we had to make the hard call of removing the plan.  We did spend a long time before launching Big Time going through all available material in relation to Go Large I would say the issues this time round are of a different nature and scale.

I'm sorry that you feel let down, I am also on this plan and certainly did not want this.

Just wondering, will there be any way that Telecom will be removing the ridiculous $20 a GB and taking it down to something more reasonable like $1-2 a GB like other ISPs?

Yes, in July overage for the Pro plan will be changed to $2 per GB down from $20

Woohoo :) keeping me happy :)

Kilack: I just looked back at my usage on this plan, the first month was pretty _large_, I think it was just novelty though of being able to download anything.
After that first month my usage dropped rapidly and now was just averaging around 60 gigs a month which I personally think is reasonable.  Not sure what kind of data telecom were hoping the average would be...

That would be a great piece of information... Doozy, if Telecom had a "soft cap" or "fair use policy" or "expected rate of use" what that would be?

There are a number of challenges to delivering a plan of this type.  The management of data and the economics of the plan have become particularly difficult.

As far as Fair Use Policies and soft caps, both were considered but for various reasons were not viable options

All they need to do is give the plan a limit of say 300gigs. That is still way better than anything else out there and is a reasonable amount of data. That way the majority of people won't have to worry about the data cap, as 300 gigs is plenty for the average user. It will just affect the leechers at the top range which are causing the issues.

Two brilliant decisions in a row. Well done Telecom.

120 pages of issues... I think the largest thread on these fourms. I know people tried really hard to make it work but it is pretty clear it can't be done at this stage

Various reasons being cannibalizing customers on Pro or other capped plans? 300GB sure sounds a lot better than 40GB on Pro or 20GB on Adventure.

hmm, in all the meetings I attended and emails/other material I saw it was never discussed, we were all focused on how we could keep the plan in market and maintain a certain level of customer experience, 'cannibalizing' from Pro just wasn't even a factor that was considered.

Our hopes were that thread would reach 200 pages. So you are saying Telecom canned the plan to prevent that thread growing?

I can say that was certainly a consideration in starting a new one, and being up so early with content ready to be FIRST ;)

I will miss the plan, i joined go large on launch and then moved to bigtime on its launch, so i havnt had a cap for over 3 years.. going back to one is going to be hard work!

Any chance that youtube could be zero rated now that you have a local cache? What about akamai downloads as well? Give back something to your customers :)

I heard you just used the same equipment for "shaping" Go Large for Big Time, any truth in that?

Any moves to add a plan for heavier users such as one with a 80-100GB cap.

When you're living in a flatting situation it's hard to control what content your flatmates download despite them knowing that you're only on a limited cap plan. This is one of the reasons big time was useful.

Personally I don't think in this day and age that a 200 page thread should be seen as a bad thing. If anything it showed me that Telecom was prepared to listen to its customers. While some users used that thread to vent their issues, in most cases they were listened to and improvements were made. Given the type of users who signed up to Big Time, they're always going to demand the best and voice their opinions and feelings. Combine that with its popularity and Telecom being the incumbent telecommunications company here in NZ and it is no surprise it was the largest thread.

If anything that thread is a feather in Telecom's cap.

No truth in that, the Big Time device was new and I believe the old Go Large one is under someones desk in Wellington right now (unconfirmed report)

And yes, it was an ideal plan for flatting situations and families which was its intent, the plan line up is under review as I've mentioned the only change I can share at this stage is Pro overage being reduced from $20 per GB to $2 which will happen in July
