What happens if they switch you over 'automatically' without telling you? You end up stuck on dialup speeds for the rest of the month because you didn't realise they'd changed you over?

well its logical they would switch on your billing date otherwise they have to wait another month or credit you the month they just charged you on your billing date.
my billing date is on the 15th so it would switch on the 15th august or 15th sept.
But I'm picking the 15th august...

So then ...

I have BigTime and purchased Tivo along the way ... and ever since purchasing Tivo the broadband usage meter has showed the grand total of 0 Mb every month ... Are the broadband meter that we can see and the broadband meter that they bill off the same thing?

I can see one of two things happening :

(1) Switching to Pro plan, and never getting charged overage (well, until they fix the usage meter)

Or

(2) Having no idea how many GB Telecom think I've used and very possibly getting a very nasty shock from Telecom when the bill arrives each month.

Which is more likely?

*Edit ... pre no meter my usage was well over the 40GB ...

I am seeing the slingshot plans but it has unlimited only from 2am. I think thats pretty decent if we dont want to take risk with world net...

My Next Question - How do i set programs to auto-start at 2:02am????!!!!! is this possible???

Most download apps (utorrent etc) have a scheduler of some sort, you leave them running 24/7, otherwise set a windows scheduled task to fire up your app of choice at about 155pm and run for however many hours you require =D

Thanks, i think i have to get practsing now b4 we have to migrate.

I was thinking about getting the pro option in slingshot and get data banking now and then. and with task scheduling it could be the next best alternative to big time

And there is chance it could be cheap as well - and a chance for heavy downloaders to be a bit more selective than just blindly downloading stuff.

Got our letter this morning.

According to Telecom, because we average 200-300gb a month we should drop the big time upgrade and go with explorer as 10gb a month will be plenty for us!

The ironic thing is that any Telecom plan for us is free but their data caps are so pathetic that we're actually going to pay another ISP for broadband.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

agree.. got the same letter today.. saying about pro plan of a crappy 40gb
its so easy to use 3gb a day.. i thought the big time was offering to those using tv on demand or watching videos.. no plan now is suitable..

bit of a Telecomgate if you ask me (like climategate to the global warming myth we are all being paid for
despite many scientist now saying co2 has little affect on the cooling and warming but related to sun spots and clouds see the docu called the global warming swindle from BBC chan4)

telecomgate.. - trick people to switch from vodafone with the best plan for on demand and then kill it once go the numbers.

so yeh they should be offering atleast 100gb for the $50 now and $2gb over usage with a warning.

and true the usage meter never seemed to be always working so can you really monitor using their system.. I instead in stall bmextreme data monitor app on pc to be sure what Im using

Nothing is stopping you going back to vodafone. Telecom is waving any early disconnection fee for big time users wanting to leave.

vodafone is crap.. but maybe another isp switch is possible
ihug was the best until vodafone messed with it.

denmark and japan have the best isps. but then our asian hong kong homestay
said he misses his unlimited data and speed isps there.. nz is a bit of stone age place still

i fact our phone lines cant even handle the basic asdl speeds.. probably gets stable only to 300kb/s never have reached the 800kb/s download

hate to think how they can offer asdl+2 here

You can't really compare us to asia, in the space of auckland they have 10 + times the population hence investing in the likes of fibre is more beneficial.

I happily can reach 1 - 1.2mb/s on my adsl2 connection and when I was on ADSL1 I was getting 700kb/s most of the day except while I was on bigtime.

If you are on a Non shaped telecom plan, and still get those speeds then I would suggest you are either too far away from your exchange and need to wait until your cabinetised  - Check here for dates http://telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

or you have something wrong with your physical line / equipment.

IMO people are expecting the likes of Telecom to just give away internet and forget they are a company obliged to make a profit for the share holders, hence removing plans that don't make profit e.g BigTime. You are never going to see full speed plans with 100gb caps for under $100 for a VERY long time or at least until international bandwidth drops dramatically in price . Its one of the down sides of living so far way from where most of the websites are hosted.

I want to know something reg adsl2+. I get pretty gud speeds with my big time right now. on telecom's site it says i am connected to adsl2+

but when i enter the same into slingshot it says it does not. So guess i cant get the next big thing.

I called slingshot this morning to ask if i can get adsl2+ speeds. the cust rep said i defntly cud ( i gave him my phone no)

but then when i asked him if i cud get the next big thing, and then he asked my adress, he said i cudnt.

So now i am confused - if i change to slingshot, how poor my speeds going to get. Will i be downgraded to old technology ??

Thanks

The Next Bigthing uses Vodafones Unbundled network. Well you would still get ADSL2+ with Normal Slingshot on Telecom Wholesale equipment, you won't be in Vodafone's Red Networks range hence not being able to get TNBT.

So if you move to slingshot, You will still get ADSL2+ but you have to choose from there regular plans not the next big thing plans
