All the traceRT's I try off shore get to about hop 14 the *** , this is frustrating. As for the Xtra helpdesk , all they can do is log it and the Complex fault team say they will come back to me....do they ... no

Yeah I noticed a massive decrease in my overall ping, ping to the US went from 400 the previous night to on average 157ms to LA. Unfortunately that means in COD5 that I keep getting lumped in with the US and mexicans. Who half the time i can't understand, the other half keep blabbing on about terrorists and generally being racist bigots. I found the odd NZ/AU server last night and that kept me going for a while

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Sanity Check

I changed to Big Time from Go Large on Monday. On Wednesday I noticed my speed had jumped a bit so I checked it. It was 3400/500. Previously 2500/128 was the max.

Now, that was on my old original Telecom-supplied Dlink. Not bad I thought. Can't wait until I get the new Thomson ADSL2 unit...

That afternoon, the Thomson arrived. I connected it up. My speed was 3400/500.

Go figure.

It seems that upgrading to Big Time gave me a speed boost on my old ADSL1 Dlink, but the new Thomson can't exceed that because I'm on Big Time.

I'm in Timaru. Exchange is 500 metres up the road.

Go Large was capped on the upload speed at 128k which in turn has a knock-on effect on the download speed. When you were changed to Big Time your upload speed was uncapped, hence you getting 500k upload even on your old router, because 500k is within the range of ADSL. Big Time does not limit your actual sync speed with the exchange so I don't know why you'd only be getting those speeds when you're half a kilometer from the exchange.

Pings def are better now, other day I was getting 300-400 anywher outside of nz, tonight i was getting 90ish to aus, which I'm reasonably happy with

Im worried about this plan now..

I was looking at moving onto this from my Orcon+ plan. But it sounds like they are having latency issues and they're shaping HTTP traffic as well.. which I was told they weren't.

Can someone clarify with some detailed background - performance wise preferably, on whether this plan is actually any good? Because I'm in two minds about it, I don't want to be locked into a 12 month contract if I'm going to get pings of 2000-10000 and speeds that I could almost get on a dial-up modem.

I know that the performance varies, which is why it would be nice if someone could give me some data based on peak AND off peak times.

The peak time international latency issue was fixed this week as far as I can tell. Have been getting normal pings to Australian FPS servers since then.

I reported the issue in mid September and I'm sure plenty of other people did so it was fixed within around a month, that's pretty good "service" for NZ based ISP.

As for http performance, depends on to where and when...

For example I recently got the Left 4 Dead Crash Course DLC from Steam during peak time and it was going about 100-130 KB/s.

Torrents are limited to 180 KB/s max during 9am-2am, I can get near max line rate (for me) of around 400 KB's after 2am

That's a subjective question, I think it's acceptable for not having to pay per GB. I don't think there is NZ steam content mirror so it was probably coming from the AU or US.

We sync at 4-5Mbit due to distance from the exchange (ADSL2 or 1 is irrelevant), our max line rate is around 400-500 KB/s.

Stale web content, this morning my NZherald web content was 20 minutes behind the real time, is this because Big Time is cached.
