Big Time Traffic Management Policy
We don't place an artificial cap on the download or upload speed on the majority of the internet activity our customers have on this plan. But because it has no fixed data allowance, we do manage all the traffic on it to optimise the experience for everyone on the plan. When the network is busy (generally inside the hours of 9am and 2am) you may notice reduced speeds, in particular you are likely to see reduced speeds in relation to file sharing traffic.
icepicknz: Sorry if this has been asked already but as there are 43 pages here, worth while asking again :)
Does anyone know what is traffic managed; is IPSEC traffic or HTTP traffic throttled?
The reason I ask, I don't mind being slowed down for downloads but I do mind if my IPSEC VPN into work is slowed. Because I work from home 3-4 days a week, I need the fastest possible connection into the office during office hours, so if this is throttled then this would be a no go for me.
thanks in advance

NoFace: Hi there, just want to ask if anyone is using Big Time at East Auckland? Escepially around Dannemora and East Tamaki. I live close to Botany town centre and is currently using vodafone ultimate package (Although I am part of the red network, I am not eligable for using red network >.<). Since my parents start to watch youtube more than before, 40GB is no longer large enough for me and my family. So I am just curious about the performance of Big Time around East auckland.
Thank you!
Hey Guys,
I'm going to give my review of Big Time Plan so far after a few days on the plan. I'm using ADSL1 since ADSL+2 isn't available in my area till Jan 2011.
Firstly, I am impressed by the plan. Telecom has provided a good plan despite slowing the connection speed during peak times.
YouTube is impressive. Surprisingly, I found it much faster than Vodafone's Ultimate Plan when it came to loading the video. 7-10 min can load pretty fast.
Web-site browsing is really fast. Like YouTube, loading web pages is much faster than Vodafone.
I'm not a torrent user but my sister uses it sometimes. It's pretty slow during the 9am to 11pm ranging from speeds from 1kb/s to 100kb/s. From 12am to 8am, it is fast ranging from speeds to 500kb/s if she uses private torrent trackers. She basically leaves the torrent on for the night and when it finishes, her laptop shuts down. When she wakes up, its all done.
I just hope this plan stays like that unlike the Go Large Plan.
I'm glad that I'm on this plan. Having no usage limit is so much better and I don't have to worry how much I use. I recommend this to anyone hating usage limit.
Hey there mate,
I live in East Auckland (about 5 minutes away from Botany Towns Centre).
I switched the Big Time Broadband Plan last Friday and what can I say.....amazing and much cheaper. I was on Vodafone broadband and I am glad to have switched to Telecom. I did have problems along the way with connecting with broadband but I got it sorted out with a few guys in this thread. It had something to do with my DSL going down.

Hello! It looks like we might be neighbours lol I live 5mins across Botany Town centre too! Just curious on what sort of ping do you get? Since I am a casual gamer sometimes sometimes, I would like to have a decent ping even during peak time. And also can you stream anything well apart from youtube? Not that it matters to me but sometimes I visit sites such as gametrailers. However my main concern is youtube streaming (my dad, azn, gets grumpy when he can't watch his favor azn TV shows ova youtube =.=). Sorry for asking so much because if I do sign up for Telecom (monstly likely the total home package), that means I will have 12 contracts with them =.= Which is huge deal for me
Thanks
Timdotz: I don't exactly know where to ask nor do I feel like reading through 40 pages... But is rapidshare throttled on big-time? I used to get a good 300kb/s since we got it, but now its been trawling in the dirt 24/7 at 30kb/s... =(

I think so yes, at least from what I've noticed. megaupload and rapidshare have slowed down a lot over the last week or so.. getting slower pretty much by the day now. I assume it is because as more people join the plan the traffic managing is kicking in a bit harder...

I am a gamer but not a multiplayer gamer. I've heard mixed reviews about multiplayer gaming but recently, Telecom has fixed it up. I don't have much information on it but you could run a ping test (http://www.pingtest.net/). I got an "A" rating but I have a feeling they aren't that accurate.
The only other site I have watched video clips is surfthechannel.com and that seems to run pretty average compared to YouTube. If you want, you could send me a few sites for me to check.
Here are my connection results and Ping Test results from speedtest.net and pingtest.net.

What I found hilarious that my connection speed on Telecom was faster than Vodafone since Telecom monitors the speed connection. :-)

Man it looks like you are getting better ping and speed than me lol! Your result really makes me consider to change :D But lastly can you just help me to check if say gametrailers.com or site like http://watchfamilyguyonline.org/ stream well? Thank you!
I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. If you use my Quic signup you can also use the code R570394EKGIZ8 for free setup.

I tried both of those sites and unfortunately, they were incredibly slow since Telecom isn't caching any other sites other than YouTube................I think. I'm not fully sure.
Normally people upload "gametrailers" clips are put on YouTube anyway but for family guy, i'm not too sure what you could do.
(It could be just our area)
