PaulZA: Something doesn't add up.

an ADSL, or VDSL modem doesn't have the capability to take down a whole network, obviously Spark know something, they aren't letting up.
If that was the case, why don't they just shut off their internet access, till someone sends a tech over, to have it resolved.

Something about their story doesn't add up.
I recon the GCSB, and FBI would need to look into this, as if this had to happen in any other country, the results would be catastrophic.

Sorry. GCSB etc are all busy trying to find out who Rawshark is.

old3eyes: I wonder if this "malware" attack is why since 10.00am I've received about 70  returned emails saying can't be delivered to intended  receipt.   Had a look at some of them and they appear random email addresses  to US URLs.

Your PC just has malware or a virus.

Ran both NOD 32 and Megabytes.  Nothing found..   I find also now I Can't send emails from my Orcon account using port 587 to mail.orcon.net.nz. .  Get a 451 temporary error.  Pleaze try later..

Someone is just sending fake SMTP headers with your email address. Not uncommon

mcraenz: I wonder if this is a paid attack by a competitor who wants to discredit Spark at what might be seen as a critical time for them as they rebrand/relaunch.

Highly illegal, and any reputable competitor wouldn't even think about it

First connect to the router over telnet
telnet <ip addr>
Username is "Administrator" (case sensitive without quotes)
Password is blank (just press enter key at the password prompt)
The enter the following commands
The last command is only if you want the change permanent, if you dont use it, the next time you reboot the router, it will use the default dns servers dished out by Spark

VDSL Routers

dns server forward dnsset flush
dns server forward dnsset add set=0 dns=202.37.245.17 metric=0 intf=PPPoE
dns server forward dnsset add set=0 dns=202.37.245.20 metric=0 intf=PPPoE
dns server forward dnsset list
saveall

Finally managed to enable telnet and apply above work around - seems to have worked well so far, vdsl not dropping in and out constantly now.
Probably coincidental, but I noticed last night that the Spark issue started at almost the exact same time as Android pushed out a 200mb update to my phone OS. I imagine a lot of people would have had that same download begin at that time. I have the Galaxy S5 through Spark.
Thanks all.

That's what I figure.  I can send OK from Orcon again.

quickymart: One outage and you're going?

Bobdn: I may be going out on a limb here, but do you do a lot of rage quitting when playing Call of Duty?

Not quite as straight forward - Kindly refrain from pulling any cynical remarks/accusations unless you have some background with my relationship with Spark. I have had issues in the past which also included being out of a connection for 4 days (not a biggie as I had mobile data) and then again when upgrading to VSDL and on top of them billing issues that were unrelated to the switchover.

Oohhh, BDFL is famous ;-)

Mauricio Freitas, who administrates the Geekzone website, said it was possible for just a few affected users to impact a larger segment of the network. It appeared Spark's DNS was on the end of an amplification attack, he said.

You didn't say that in your post, and I have never seen any posts from you (of this nature - or otherwise) prior to now.

Hopefully the other ISPs are checking they have rate limiting in place to avoid running into the same problem later down the track

There are a number of different mitigations across multiple different parts of the stack being worked on right now. Proactive work is being taken to not further impact customers.

Just wanted to say thanks to Gujal - have changed my Technicolour's DNS per your suggestions and we now have a stable connection again. I assume once everything is fixed I just turn the router off and on again to return to the standard settings?
