myfullflavour: What a disaster. Guy in store checked ID, checked phone software version and some other things but he could not figure out how to initiate the transfer process to esim within his CRM. He rang another store and they didn’t know how to do it either. Now waiting for a call back tomorrow, apparently Spark don’t have a cell centre available to support the retail staff.

@myfullflavour - which store did you go to? Try the Devonport road store, after an initial bit of confusion managed to get mine swapped over there without much of a hastle. I can’t remember the staff members name but she managed to figure it out pretty quickly

They have had a few options to contact, but all this would have been covered in their training before esims launched.

At this stage, contact centers can not provision esims, so the rep can't exactly just ask the contact center to do it.

In this case, I'd love to know which store (over DM) it was so i can ask the right folk to give that store additional support :)

Tauranga Crossing. Will give Devonport RD a go tomorrow unless my contact at TC comes back to me.

What I meant about contact centre - is I’d expect there be some sort of back office retail support line so staff can get help on things like this.

Presuming this was on a Spark sourced device?

On the Spark eSim FAQ it now says:

Can I bring my iPhone from another provider?

You will be able to at the end of May, watch this space!

So hopefully this is the timeline for non Spark Sourced devices

With the news around eSIM and Spark, and the plans for Vodafone and 2Degrees - I am wondering why Spark is only offering for set handsets?

I am asking as I use a Pixel 3XL from the USA, is it unlikely this will be supported by Voda or 2Degrees when they finally release eSIM? I don't really understand the technology but it's hugely attractive to me as a concept

My question specifically is what about eSIM technology means it's device dependent and does this mean other networks will limit it to device as per Spark has

From a technology stack, It's a staged rollout. (includes the network and the tools agents/customers consume)

The method Spark have used to bring esim to market is more of an iterative approach, so every release we do they are adding more and more support.

The idea being, this puts it in the hands of customers faster.

As someone who delivers in other areas of the business, I'm quite excited about seeing this happen in more areas.

i think there difficult thing is how it shows up for customers, particularly for things like esim which is quite heavily desired in the IT area.

I also understand although esim appears to be quite generic there are some devices that still require extra special configurations Unique to that device. Think it was the apple watch?

So it would not surprise if even when we think it's fully rolled out there aren't particular devices that dont quite work.

As for your Pixel 3XL, i'd heavily suggest checking band support. Most USA model devices are not suited for NZ at all.

It supports 3, 7, 28 and 40, should be fine.

Seems to be available now to those who did not get their device from Spark. Looks like a work in progress as the QR codes have disappeared from their site but the site does now state:

We're very pleased to now be able to offer eSIM connections to customers who have bought their device from somewhere other than Spark. Visit a Spark store and the team can get you set up with eSIM.

I'll be popping into my store this afternoon to see.

Damn that was announced fast. Normally would have waited till Wednesday to put it out.

Think that goes to show the demand was noticed and it was made top priority to get it in your hands :)

Enjoy!

So what happens when you get a new iPhone? For example you get the new iPhone later this year from Apple NZ online. Is it a case of you won't be able to use it until you have visited a Spark store? Or are there plans for an online portal of some sort?

It's my understanding this comes at a later date.
Can't comment officially there.

Device swaps on esim fit into that awkward category as your back to doing a sim swap... Valid concerns for fraud there.

Buy the new iPhone from spark and they will do it in store at purchase for you. Easy fix.
