I wasn't actually in when it unfolded :) I was out of town and assumed the delayed text messages were sketchy cell coverage where I was for an hour or two. I did think it was odd as I don't usually don't have issues with Spark.

I wonder how many fibre/dsl ISP's authenticate users down here (Invervegas) locally apart from maybe Velocity? None?

In an ideal world, the connection wouldn't go up north to be routed and end up back down here on the other side of town. Otherwise it'd be easy enough to VPN across town to someone who has a working backup.

Your wallet may not quite agree... although Kacific1 is cheaper in bulk rather than a backup link..

One of our wholesale WAN providers does, though they're not really a standard ISP. All the WAN sites that terminate in Invercargill could communicate with each other still, but no further.

Generally if you're on the same ISP, a lot of local traffic would stay local but as you pointed out, the authentication has to happen locally as well for things to stay up (or in the case of our WAN, it's all IP based, not PPPoE, so no authentication is required)

Sadly couldn't get a PPPoE session in Invercargill once the link went down completely at about 10 pm, because as you say, those servers live further North (I guess ChCh in 2degree's case).

How long would ALL comms be down for (Fibre, mobile, landline) if there was a major earthquake in Wellington(as an example)? Could be 4 bridges with NZ comms on totally washed out.

Quite scary really when you consider the commercial implications of businesses in total reliance of this eg eftpos, banking. I would assume some group will have done planning for this eventuallity?

Not just a NZ thing, but we are more vulnerable than a lot of countries.

There is a lot more connectivity into Wellington than the bottom of the south island. This being said if Featherston st / Courtney Place exchanges were hit there would be big trouble.
