My transfer to skinny is also the same as @gmball, both 2degrees (current isp) and skinny said that having the connection date (30 oct) before end of service with 2D (8th nov) wouldnt be a problem. In chch with enable as infrastrucutre so not sure if that makes a difference.

Router also arrived this morning after being dispatched from AKL yesterday, so now just a waiting game until 30th Oct

Have been with slingshot for about 3-4 years. Coincidentally they phoned yesterday offering a deal on power and internet so I thought it a good time to investigate both. Even with the discounts offered, the 6 months free is simply too good to pass up, so have ordered from Skinny today. Have put a connection date at the end of my next billing cycle and sent cancellation for the same date. Hopefully this goes smoothly.....

I'm with Chorus and 2Degrees and supposedly with Chorus you can only have one active order at any one time. And I've been told you cannot submit a connection request ahead of disconnection as there is an existing connection in place.

So basically 2Degrees have to process the disconnection before Skinny can submit a connection request.

One would have thought there would have been a streamlined process given people must be frequently changing providers, and want to avoid any significant period of downtime?

Agree with you. The system doesn't seem very user friendly. I assumed one orders the new connection from Skinny and Skinny give you a connection date. Then you arrange your cancellation from your existing provider for that date , so as not to be left with no connection.
If Skinny/Chorus cannot give you a connection date until you cancel, it seems a bit fraught with possibilities of no connection for a period.

Yes - you definitely have to place the order with your new provider and get confirmation of the Chorus switchover date before notifying your existing provider of a cancellation, otherwise (as the appropriate Bigpipe article points out) if you tell your existing provider of the changeover first, they will place a disconnection order which will have to be fulfilled before Chorus accepts a new order on the connection, resulting in up to a week without service.

I am changing from Stuff-Fibre, so ordered the new connection from Skinny yesterday, and once they let me know that Chorus had confirmed a date (1 November), I then informed Stuff-Fibre that I would be changing providers. In return, Stuff-Fibre said they've set the cancellation date for the end of my current billing period (14 November) so to make sure that the new provider takes over by then.

Thanks for this. Probably the most helpful reply in this thread. I've reached out to 2Degrees my existing provider to cancel the disconnection request on my account, will wait for this to be processed before asking Skinny to submit a connection request. Will then go back to 2Degrees to provide my 1 month notice period.

So I did the same switch from stuff to skinny and completed my transfer yesterday.

Like you guys they didn't place the order as a transfer for cutover in 1/11 so I approached stuff who said my billing period ends Monday so either move the or push it back to 25/11 to avoid overlapping service and wasting my money. Have to say I'm impressed with stuff customer care actually being honest about the situation to save me money despite leaving them.

I ended up talking to enable who were able to submit a cancellation to stuff and get me activated yesterday before the next billing cycle. I had planned a 24 hope overlap but that sorted us out as an actual transfer not a new customer.

Have to say the reality of the transfer was easy but the logistics of the biking period and commencement date is all a bit annoying. If I had to give 39 days notice would skinny have submitted the cancellation now or just not bothered.

Just received my Skinny Smart Modem, and it looks like I'll either have to buy the existing Stuff Fibre Asus router or buy a new one, as the Smart Modem has a maximum of ten DHCP reservations. I need to keep static IP addresses on home stuff such as lights so they work with Home Assistant, so it definitely won't work for me. First router I've ever had with such a small number of MAC-based DHCP reservations.

Is that something different with the Skinny firmware? I don't remember running into this with the 'Spark' smart modem.

Could you disable the DHCP server on the Skinny router and run a separate server? Perhaps on the device that's running Home Assistant, as that's presumably running all the time anyway.

Is Skinny broadband exactly the same as Spark except a different support and billing path? Are there any differences to be aware of?

I would have assumed they would use the same modem, but who knows. The Skinny one is an Arcadyan VRV9517, and here's the appropriate settings page - maybe there's a firmware update I could apply?

Thanks for the suggestion: I'll bear it in mind although I'd prefer the router to handle DHCP. What I'm thinking of doing once the changeover occurs, is to compare the connection speeds with three different routers (the Stuff-Fibre Asus RT-AC59U, the Skinny Smart Modem and an EdgeRouter-X I have lying around) and then make my decision.

I suspect the speeds will be about the same, in which case I will use the ER-X as the router and the Smart Modem as a wired AP, alternatively I can buy the Asus router off Stuff-Fibre if that has better speeds, or use either the ER-X or Home Assistant to provide DHCP if the Smart Modem shows a big advantage.

We got hooked up to this on VDSL late last week. Got an email today to say they couldn't see our connection and we needed to use the Skinny router. I'm guessing after they "see" the connection they won't care anymore and I can go back to using my Unifi setup?

Fibre connection here, initially i couldn't get my Nest Wifi setup to connect directly to the ONT. But once i plugged the skinny router in and verified the connection was working, then plugged the Nest back in directly it fired up and worked. Could have just been a timing thing. Someone else might know better.
