NealR: Yes, the new XTNetwork from Telecom will have SIM cards.

Yes, some of the existing VodafoneNZ handsets are compatible with the new network. No, we don;t currently have a list of the compatible devices.

Summary: Vodafone uses 2100MHz in main centres, 900MHz outside. Telecom uses 850MHz everywhere with a few 2100MHz sites.

Whats the story with existing Telecom (on contract) customers, in regards to upgrages to new handsets? Also, if I am currently on the contract with Telecom, does that mean I will not be required to sign another contract to transfer onto new network?

The better bet would be the E71-3. The -2 would work on the 850 network but with talk of them also adding 2100MHz infill later it would pay to get the model that has 850/2100 = E71-3

Cheers Scott. I'd rather stay put. But from a business perspective it's embarrasing trying to talk with customers with all but 1 bar signal strength. The E71-1 is better than the C702 I was using before though! No guarantees XT will be any different, and I doubt VF will be adding 900MHz UMTS here in 'Kura. Will just wait and see...

I just seen the new ad in the last min on TV3, its the same ad but slightly modified to say its the Telecom XT mobile network

I'm not in a position to say whether you will need to sign a new contract to join the new XT Network or not. However I do know that @telecomnz and Gen-i will have a range of offers to make it easy for both new and existing customers to switch to Telecom?s new mobile network.

Its going to be interesting to watch as this all unfolds - At the end of the day it'll all be about reliability, coverage and raw performance. I'm waiting for the big red machine to go into spin cycle and start blowing smoke to confuse the market as the XT launch date grows closer - never a dull moment

Neither company wins if they go negative. Kiwis IMO don't like it. Telecom produced a slick looking ad and eventually its the consumer that will decide long term if it lives up to the quotes in it, once a actual good amount of people are on it and once the honeymoon is over.

Plenty of people like my dear old mum who aren't even aware that the two networks are different now and aren't even aware of the fuss in the geek world. She thought the ad was for a new Top Gear show lol

Exactly, this sort of disclaimer needs to be accepted before every user posts - we are a bunch of big fish (some of us think we are much bigger than others) in a very small pond.

Let's let Neal do what he is good at and not bother him with a swag of trivial questions. It is 2 weeks to wait, it isn't going to kill you to see what happens when it happens, but asking Neal every intricate detail will very near kill him or at least his willingness to share with us what he can.

If Telecom wanted this stuff to be known now, it would be known now.

(This isn't targeted at you boby55, it is a general statement you just happened to have the nearest relevant post to quote)

LOL indeed, the big T & the Big red, both blow smoke now and then!

good thing about all this is by June 1 NZ will have 2 nationwide 3G networks, i would say there are few if any countries that have 2 nationwide networks let alone one.... well we know Aussie has one.
