Please not, some of us actually use it for legal uses such as streaming radio, gaming and vpn.

National traffic for this stuff is rather cheap and probably a good 95% of my usage (including YouTube). The remainder is testing out Torrents, rapidshare just to keep tabs on things.

I'm so glad I'd just bought Killer Klowns before I tried the task of embarking on a venture to locate and then download a rapidshare copy, what a pain in the neck and the quality sucked-4SS. I also downloaded a FLAC torrent for a CD track that would not rip from a CD due to a nasty scratch and even Marbecks could not find a replacement.

If you want your connection for streaming things from websites or online radio etc and fast browsing then Big time is not for you. All the restrictions to try and limit the usage of people who sit on bit torrent and p2p 24/7 have an affect everything else on your connection. So if you are after speed while using the internet don't bother with big time. If your a p2p kid and just care about getting data then sure, jump on Big time. For example getting software updates or other legit downloads from http are often limited so you have to multi thread to get anything above 70k.

To put this simple i changed from Telecom Pro 40gb plan to Big Time and changed back to Pro after 3 days, i have ADSL2 and do online gaming on a Xbox360 and download torrents, i dont know if this was just me but i have my ports open for torrent downloading and on the big time plan they seamd to close no matter how much i changed them i could only keep them open for 30sec, speedtest.net gave me the same download speed on each plan tho, as for online gaming if the host of the game was anwhere outside NZ i wuld have the worst connection and could not play, i also host games and anyone outside of NZ would have the worst connection in any of my games on Big Time.

jdgamez: Hi i am on Big Time and well the pings to aus servers are crap most the time but in a way it is a good thing as it has made me do more work rather then gaming

as for downloads i have managed to download just over 1 terabyte in a 1 month period of time
this is with a ssl connection on a usenet server and i get a constant 800 kilabytes on it

as for speed most the time it is fine for most things such as youtube
but at times download over a non ssl conection cann be very slow

is it worth it well if you are like me and download a lot then hell yea it is worth it

Just like to know more about how to use ssl connection for download? or what is ssl connection? is this same as 128bit encription they use for online banking website?

adresdendoll: After getting the DNS sorted out with Telecom, Ive found it to be pretty good. Its nice to know that if my partner or flatmate goes on a bandwidth binge, that the im not going to get stung with overage charges. On a side note, one way that I found to get around the traffic shaping is to use an SSL Usenet connection. I am able to max out the line at 1.2MBs

Noob question but how do you set up the ssl thing
Using big time and its extermly shaped for me???
Please help

I'm trying to download a 44mb file (Logitech SqueezeCentre) over HTTP and it's going at 14k and estimates another 45 mins! On my old plan this would be downloaded in not more than a minute or two.

I've also found out since joining that Port 25 opt out doesn't work on Big Time.

I've also noticed alot of packet loss on my VoIP lines since the change too.

Yeah I had heard that un-cached youtube videos were unwatchable, basically.

Speed varies from time of day and how many users and blah blah blah. so if yo utried to download that same file again now, you will more than likely get a different result.

I know you know this, but for the sake of anyone else not sure;

This plan is NOT for things such as VOIP or any latency-sensitive applications/services (gaming).

and well, its not a speedy plan either. It's for bulk-downloaders, thats it.

My mate has been very fortunate where he is. Hes about 500m from the local box and he gets very good speeds for what you would expect from a shared network/plan.

He maxes his line out most of the time that i've spoken to him about it, or been at his house.

Actually they seemed to have sorted the gaming and VoIP. These are working just as well now as before I changed and have been consistantly for a week or more now

Thats good to hear.

When I was speaking to a couple of reps at Telecom, the thing that worried me the most is they both said its possible that Telecom may have to throttle ALL data depending on how popular and how much data people download.

I dont care about throttling with P2P, but, throttling on HTTP and VOIP etc is what worries me. I dont want to be tied into a 12 month contract and then start limiting the world.

I specifically asked if HTTP throttling was an option, and he said since its says "all data" can be shaped, that means HTTP is definitely included in that "ALL".

So i'll be hanging fire a wee while more before signing myself off for a 12 month contract that i might end up hating myself for a couple of months down the track.

I'm out of my contract term with Telecom, but even if I wasn't you can still move between plans once a month, so if Big Time turns to custard, you can always change to one of their other plans.

I would agree if it was only me using the net here.

but once you've got 4 users (and 4 different computers) that are all know how to use an internet browser + torrents etc, its hard to control them as well.
And a couple of the other users are teenagers, and have no concept really of how much data this file will use etc.
and trying to explain it to them well.. I might as well be talk to a hollow tree.
