I haven't used my mobile broadband for a while but today I fired it up on the train ride into work and whilst I didn't get disconnected, performance was abysmal.  30% packet loss the whole way in, and even now while stationary at work.

Edit: Hah, the moment after posting this the packet loss disappeared...

I'm back using XT's data service again for a couple of days and I have to say that the situation seems to have improved dramatically.

I've been connected for almost 2 hours and my connection has been superfast with no dropouts or stalls.

Whatever you Telecom guys/gals have been doing, keep doing it!

Cheers,
Grant.

yep it's been much better here too. Still the occasional dropout but can always get back on straight away.

Wednesday 2nd December, connection stalled five times from 1pm through 2:15pm (the time of this post). Usualy stalls after 4- 5 MB transferred over the network.

I'm aware of a few issues off the southern RNC, trying to find out if this could be the cause.

Yep, like Vodafone when it first came to market - just not ready for prime time.
My XT 'T stick' locks up, drops out, shows it's connected when it's not, shows max signal strength when it probably really is quite poor. Whilst I was 'diagnosing' the problem, I would start a 'tracert', throw the laptop in the ute, and drive around, until I got good speed from the 'tracert'. I can tell you this for free, when in a prime area, the service is really fast, but on moving 50m in one test, speed dropped considerably. All this in a so called prime reception area.

I use Nat Bank Directlink system for bill payments, wages etc and it commonly drops out and loses the (secure) link. Have had made multiple complaints and escalations, and to be fair, it seems like they are trying. However, I've gone back to Vodafone, as XT is too unreliable

After a great few weeks, xt broadband has been about as much use as bad dialup for the last 2 or 3 days here in Golden Bay.
Maybe its the influx of tourists with their free datasticks overloading the network?

Ok, so now we are in to 2010 and still no word from Telecom on the data network. I'm running a ZTE MF626 on contract and have experienced dropouts almost every day.

I'm mainly in Blenheim and Havelock in the South Island but also noticed it over Christmas while in Rotorua.

I had the sim swapped out in December but that has made no difference.

Any ideas??

It looks like this could be a load issue. Last weekend I had no problem using the XT data network for hours...

Yea a SIM swap out won't help, although if you had a V1 SIM (non XT logo with black TXT) it's worth changing to a V2 SIM.

Can you provide any more details? Signal strength? I'm not sure of the ZTE's come with the USB cable, but have you tried one to move the device away from the PC as this can help also, possibly getting a few more dB in signal strength also.

Yeah, on a V2 sim now.

It has happened in good coverage areas as well as bad and on 2 different laptops. The device doesn't come with a cable but maybe a test with a USB extension cable could be on the cards.

Just gets annoying, knowing your paying for a service that doesn't function right. And Telecom's offshore call center isn't much help.

I wonder if you've got a dodgy card?

I've been doing some fairly extensive testing of both XT and VF over the last month. I did encounter some issues on XT leading up to mid December but have not encountered a single issue since.

Yeah, just been put through to Telecom's data experts, they say the same thing, they have no knowledge of any issues of this kind with the XT network.

I guess I'll be sending the modem away for testing......
