Got recommended Pro broadband as well... had a good laugh at the letter!

I signed up for Slingshot - $50 p/m for 25GB, unlimited data 2am to 8am so I can schedule any big downloads during those hours. And finally can -actually- watch streaming video again for the first time in 12 months.

Completed the signup online on Friday night and connected Sunday afternoon!

Thats not bad turnaround. I plan to do get the same pack. How are the speeds with slingshot. Are there any notice-able differences.

Do we have to change username / password / any other settings??

Any other changes to look forward for? Thanks

When you sign with Slingshot you will get a new username / password which will need to be entered in your router, if you know where to enter that you won't have anything else to worry about.

They told me it would take around a week, but my Telecom internet went down today so I wondered if it was being changed over, stuck my new Slingshot details in the router and it all worked!

Haven't really tested speed yet, just checked some ustream and justin.tv which were unwatchable under Big Time and they played nice and smoothly :)

I was with Slingshot before moving to Telecom and never had any problems with them, was just tempted by the Big Time carrot.

Mospit,

Great. Thanks for your review.

I hope to hear from more of current big time users and what they intend to do in the coming weeks now... ... ...

Does anyone have any feedback on how slingshot is performance wise at the moment? how much can you get during the off peak periods?

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.

boby55: Telecom is waving any early disconnection fee for big time users wanting to leave.

Do we have a source for this? Having a bit of trouble with closing up my account. (moving house where there is an existing telecom account / connection)

this is a slap in the face!

boby55:
IMO people are expecting the likes of Telecom to just give away internet and forget they are a company obliged to make a profit for the share holders, hence removing plans that don't make profit e.g BigTime. You are never going to see full speed plans with 100gb caps for under $100 for a VERY long time or at least until international bandwidth drops dramatically in price . Its one of the down sides of living so far way from where most of the websites are hosted.

I thought they all buy from Southern Cross Cables?

Also, correct me if someone here knows the story, aren't bandwidth sold around the world in terms of "bandwidth" rather than "traffic" ? ie. 1000mbps lines costing say 12,000 USD, and traffic is free as the price includes maintenance etc.

Otherwise, how DO they afford it all?

I saw some hosting services around the world, say this where they provide

112 GBit Bandwidth
Redundant Network
Juniper Routing-Technology
100 % switched network; np collision domains
High Speed Access to all Internet-Uplinks
24/7 Monitoring
Network Availability min. 99%

though 99% is less than great, but get this "fine print"

*There are no charges for overage. We will permanently restrict the connection speed to 10 MBit/s if more than 5000 GB/month are used. 100 MBit/s speed can be optionally restored by committing to pay 6,90 € (incl. VAT) per additional TB used.

7 Euro is what $13 NZD? for every TB, or 1000GB. And speed is "capped" to 10Mbps from 112Gbps.

Where does our money go? As far as I recall, Southern Cross Cables have paid off all of it's debts "early" a great success. Telecom hasn't been doing so well due to it's XT network what not, but during it's heydays it was easily in the profits of billions of dollars.

More than likely that traffic is pretty much completely peered at an international peering site.

I hope not too many people fall for the "trap" that 'World Net' sets on innocent prospective customers.

My personal experiences were absolutely horrible!

Here's some details on their speed at their MAX:

USA: https://www.speedtest.net/result/884458416.png
NZ: https://www.speedtest.net/result/884453562.png

And also, a quote from another user:

"Torrents goes as fast as 30kbs after 9 o'clock and 5kb/s in afternoons. Youtube unwatchable in 240p (not even 320p) after 9a.m. WHAT A JOKE! "

Not only this, after digging into the site a week ago, I came across information that the "unlimited" plan slowed you down after 600MB~700MB of usage in one day.  I can't seem to find this information again, but if what I read is true... Taking that a normal calendar month is 30 days long... 18000MB~21000MB per month.

No wonder it's the same price as their 20GB plan?

Also:

And by the looks of Telecom's Big Time going out, I bet they'll get a lot of new customers... Which will in overall decrease what little service they give you... or scrap their so-called "unlimited" plan within a year.

Just letting people know... Don't make the same mistake that I have made.

I'd personally move to Slingshot, or 'Megatel'.  I've heard good things about the latter, but not 100% sure about them... Not too sure about XNet either.  Just my opinion people.

I just checked out the megatel plans. They had Normal price & then "Package price".

When i tried to call them i got a plain answer message - giving me a feeling like some ones operating it from home.

Hah! I'm not sure about that, all I know (and care) was that I was with them for 6 months with a double-data promotion (on a 2 year contract)... And they were bloody brilliant! Of course, I disconnected afterwards... I didn't really care about the early disconnection fee.  And then went to Telecom for Big Time. Sigh.  Now I feel stupid going back to them... So I might not :/

I was on their FS/128k plan... Didn't have a problem with the upload speed. I still torrented at 900kb/s+!

Nice.

Would like to hear more from new slingshot users. Please also give feedback on speeds, etc. What plan have you taken. Did you run it between 2-8am, etc?

Hi, Need to get off big time soon, any one got any recommendations? Currently doing 60 -120gb per month. I have a @xtra.co.nz email adress I would like to retain? Im thinking maybe going on the 60gb business plan. But any suggestions would be sweet.

Cheers

If you want to retain the @xtra.co.nz email, you have to pay $10/month for it.

Like people before me, I think Slingshot is the only viable option at the moment I'm afraid...

The "unlimited" hours in the late-night (and early-mornings) is the only "ideal" option...

Like I've stated before... Be careful with some of the ISPs that offer "unlimited" broadband. They're definitely not all what they seem to say.
