Gordy7:

Skinny Modem was received on 27 August with v6.00.12 build07 and udated over the past week. I didn't see it go through 6.00.14 update or find loss of 5GHz WiFi until I returned home yesterday.

Right ok, so it was within the weekly cycle.

It won't update through each update. the way the skinny updater works, is it reaches out checks a file, if the version doesn't match existing, it will pull down the verison indicated.

Just out of interest, what is the practical capacity of the Smartmodem in terms of the number of wired and wireless devices I can connect.

I have just added a bunch of google speakers and home hubs etc, and am looking at some lightbulbs at the moment. The number of devices I have seems to be growing quite quickly. I don't want to get back I the situation I was with the Huawei box.

Had to turn off band steering again after the update.
Never had a router with this feature before but it's definitely broken.
Still get the issue where no internet is detected on 5GHz.
Easier to set and forget on 2.4GHz.

there are limits set on the wireless interface, 48 and 64 clients from memory.

These aren't hard limits like the 659b had, they are just set for practical sense of once you get over that many your really going to have a crap wireless experience.

largest limitation you will have is the 243 IP limit in the DHCP range :)

Sounds like it's trying to roam you and your device is refusing to roam.

Thanks hio77.

Do you know how BigPipe units will fit into that schedule?

The platform for mesh updates is shared, so they will update at the same time - Units check for updates a few times a week between 2am and 4am.

Modem update is a bit of a longer path for a public release as we do need to go through a few stages.

Will the MESH units update if they are operating behind a router that is NOT the Smart modem? I am currently using my Smart Modem and Smart Mesh units as WAPs behind an Edgerouter X while I wait for the updates to come through.

I may have missed it earlier but what are the key features or defect fixes in this release?

Trusty Hg569b just died.

If I'm tired of bugs/dropouts/problems(in my day to day work). And just want a device that 'works' when I get home.

Are these stable enough to be worth getting yet?
Or do they need to mature a bit more? Like a good whiskey.

hio77:
There are 3 issues here.
1. A hard fault, causing the smart modem to reboot. Best way to reduce this is to reboot the modem at like 2am.this issue reoccurs at almost the exact time every day so a reboot in the wee hours moves the impact away.
2. An issue where bandsteering a device has a period of no ip. This is illevated by turning bandsteering off, reducing 2.4ghz power is the option I personally use. There is also a paramater change that improves this a ton.
3. After being online for awhile SSDP traffic gets lost between mesh and base unit. Rebooting modem, device and mesh fixes this. Otherwise if you use WiFi on both the same network its also fine.

in relation to the original issues, I am thinking this upcoming Mesh update might look to address issue number 2? With issues 1 and 3 part of the modem fix(es) which are later on? Or is it a bit more than that?

I've been using the SmartModem and a single SmartMesh since February this year and I have had no issues.

I've been working from home since April, others have had periods working from home, others have been streaming video, we've videoconferenced using Zoom. I do a lot of videoconferencing for work.

Maximum of 5 people here at any one time. Devices are 5 smartphones, 2 tablets, 6 windows laptops, 3 TVs, Xbox, PS4, 2 MFDs.

SmartModem and SmartMesh are connected via ethernet cables, all other devices are WiFi.

Very happy with them, performance & coverage has been much better than old HG569B router.

Obviously some folk have been having issues as identified in this thread, but none of these have affected us.

Yes. will work perfectly.

the smart modem does have the capability to tftp between the nodes to update, but we aren't making use of that for firmware upgrades.

It's a tad complex, and the mesh unit itself is identical regardless of which of the 3 brands it comes from.
