I stepped thru the setup again very carefully, and thought that this time it was all working good, however about 18 hours later I lost internet through the Smart Mesh AP. WiFi scanner showed the Smart Mesh AP was still sending out a good signal, but the smart modem could not see the smart mesh, even though the Smart Mesh still had the Blue LED lit up.

When I set it up the connection status page on the smart modem shows as "Good Connection" not excellent as per yours. I did notice that the connection between the smart modem and the mesh sometimes shows as 5G, and sometimes 2.4G, with signal strength at the smart mesh varying around -55dBm to - 60dBm.

the Smart modem is on the floor almost directly above the Smart Mesh, no more than 5 meters seperates the 2 modems, using a wifi connection between the units.

Using a Wifi scanner, shows no other nearby wifi aps on the same channel as either the smart modem or the Mesh on either 2.4 or 5G bands.

Im afraid that this Smart Mesh seems pretty Dumb!

Likely be interference on the 5ghz channel that it's trying to avoid.

i tested these very heavily and never had it do this, Except in the case that it's actually a bad signal.

Example being my mesh unit in Garage. It's a -55dB 2.4ghz signal, but a -75~80dB signal on 5ghz. so it's doing exactly what it should and dropping to the more consistent backhaul.

still gets a solid 50~80mbit.

in my usecase, this really doesn't matter as the garage unit is literally just to give devices 5ghz in the garage - i hate using 2.4ghz on physical devices.

so when i come home and park up, i'm already on 5ghz, walk up to the house and it roams across to other mesh units.

There are no other WIFI AP on 5Ghz band nearby. the signal strength has gone from -55dBM to - 80dBm....

At -83dB there is no surprise that its avoiding 5ghz and preferring the 2.4ghz backhaul.

Your location is not ideal. Likely something in the floor blocking it.

What is the likelihood of a faulty unit?

It was using 5GHZ for backhaul.

but now its back to -53dBm!!..

only thing that has changed is the time!  an hour later!

maybe the unit is faulty??

I'd be more convinced that the channel has another noise source or something physically in the environment.

In my time I have not come across a single faulty unit apart from one of mine that the tx port wasn't working - and I'm suspecting I accidentally shorted that...

It's possible though. Just alternative reasons is more likely to be the cause. Wireless isn't always a consistant thing.

Maybe it would be worth experimenting by putting the Smart Mesh in the same room as the Smart Modem, and see if it continues to fluctuate with the 5 Ghz signal strength? If it continued to do it in very close proximity would that be more suggestive of a faulty unit?

Definitely worth a try!

Apologies if this has been asked - 58 pages is a lot to read.

I can’t view my security system from outside the house anymore once updating to the new spark smart modem. How do I enable Port forwarding? I can’t find it in the settings and the manual is only a quick start guide.

Port forwarding is not recommended for network security reasons.

You could use Anydesk or Teamviewer for external access to your home security system.

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

I could view outside the home with the old huawei one. Maybe port forwarding isn’t what I’m looking for but it wasn’t a problem with the old modem?
