It's a good idea. It should actually check for valid IMEI as someone could enter any number there - in theory it should reduce the number of stolen goods being listed.

Of course it wouldn't prevent some low life entering the same IMEI over and over, unless Trade Me is prepared to make it a sophisticated blocking mechanism, but should reduce a lot.

It would make listing handsets harder though, as most people have no idea what IMEI is and where to find it...

That would be great - Trade Me should really forward ther IMEI (or serial numbers for that matter) so people do know what they are getting.

Think its a great idea.
Just put a warning that the imei will be sent to the buyer of the auction and if sellers do enter in random numbers then they know they are entering in fakes ones.
A tick box for "you accept the terms and the IMEI is correct for the phone you are selling" can be added as well.
If users don't enter one they can't sell it.

On the other side once a buy wins they could also do a "does the phone have this IMEI ***********" with a yes/no before feedback is placed.

This can then give phone sellers a good/bad rating for selling unblocked phones.

Now if only 2 degrees would share/use the same black list :P

Maybe in the interim TradeMe could simply allow a feedback option for the buyer only, that enables them to indicate the seller was passing on suspect goods (tickbox option not a comment) without a right of reply from the seller.

Despite our best intentions there will be genuine cases of people selling stuff they've bought themselves without knowing they were suspect... and thinking they've bought a dud or don't know how to use it, simply selling it on.

That's exactly what I suggested to TradeMe.

Require Sellers to enter in the IMEI, check it against the internal EIR register that TradeMe holds (plus re-check all currently listed and recently sold phones when they get an updated database since it can sometimes be delayed). Don't list the IMEI publicly as that could mean that there may be malicious people who bar it by filing a false police report. Then e-mail the winner of the trade what the IMEI is so they can confirm that the phone is what it should be. Even better if they have the trader take a photo which is private showing the IMEI under the battery / or the "*#06#" screenshot which is e-mailed to the winner.

Should help reduce fraud which benefits no one apart from the scammers and only creates masses of frustration for the buyers

Trademe has many icons indicating many things such as "Verified user" "Buy Now" etc.. Maybe for that section it could have an icon to state "phone verified not stolen" same for cars by running their Rego number, this will encourage more people to add this information volunteer to gain buyer's trust.

It will help to have a little warning for auctions that hasn't verified their IMEI or REGO number etc...

The question is, using this method for Trademe will put them in the risk of being blamed for a con or something, and it might help to add some wording to avoid legal responsibility or so. Something like

"This vehicle Rego has been checked on xx/xx/2012 and hasn't been reported stolen by that date/time."

I no legal expert but I thought to share my idea.

That's exactly why TradeMe should never go down this road. They could put themselves at risk of legal liability.

It's all to do with wording surely.
Firstly not allowing the listing to be posted until the details have been checked/verified against databases, and notifying listers (and Police??) why a listing has been declined.
Then add 'Submitted IMEI verified' or 'Submitted VIN verified' (for vehicles) to the listing.

It may be a simple thing to do, but there will always be bottom feeders who'll submit valid data and supply invalid goods, they're a creative mercenary lot.

But I agree there is merit in such a scheme as it will stop most of the idiots and prevent some genuine people (parents and grandparents?) being used and burnt by 'friends' and 'family'.
