Without reading the entire thread, did anyone cover off while it only applies to modile users and not to broadband/landline users? Seems a bit on the nose to exclude most (?) of their customers.

isn't the whole point of the wifi access points to take load off the cellular network in popular areas?

Why? I think they want to raise the profile of their mobile offering and give users a great reason to stay, and prospective customers a great reason to port their numbers over to Telecom.

Retrofitting WiFi into their pay phone network suddenly makes an arguably legacy asset useful again and something the other telcos can't easily offer.

How does Telecom plan to identify and stop people degrading services, it's not impossible to imagine a few people are going to try to register 5 'devices' per SIM and do a large amount of traffic daily simply spoofing their MAC address(SIM's not required after registering a specific MAC) if they live or work near a phone box.

Took a stroll to oriental bay after going to the market and watched the first period of the bruins/lightning nhl game on my iPhone using the telecom wifi. Very impressed.

It's limited to 1GB per day and for that you either pay 10 bucks per month, or have telecom mobile where you pay at least 19 per month.

So yes, people can do a lot of traffic, but it will actually cost them money so it's not practical to do a serious amount of data. Like hundreds of GBs.

E.g. 300GB will require ten subscription. Cheapest way to do that is ten lots of ten dollar subs, which also requires ten sims. But for 100 and a lot less hassle you can get more data than that anyway on e.g. Orcon unlimited

richms: I find that it will auto reconnect if you are gone for a while, but come back next day and it will pop up the notification to log onto the network and I have to press somethign on the page.

_REALLY_ annoying since because of androids braindeadness of turning off the 3g before checking that the wifi works, you are sitting there with your phone in your pocket offline till you look at it and press the thingie on the redirected web page to actually work.

They better fix this issue before they start charging for it.

There is no cost if you used WiFi before the 13th, still 7 weeks free for people in that situation regardless of network used. Depends if it's 1GB per device (5 max until trial ends then drops to 2) or 1GB across multiple devices (or MAC addresses..). So it could be either 30GB or 150GB a month for a $2 SIM if you went and got a Skinny one 2 weeks ago.

Right but once that time is up, it won't be worth it. And since the wifi is mostly Either vdsl or fibre back hauled, a few people here or there abusing it won't be too big a deal.

I'm pretty close to set on changing from 2 Degrees to Telecom for this:

$19 per month for 100 min, Text, 500 MB on 3G and a gig a day over the Wifi network.

Having said that it almost looks like; If It Looks Too Good to Be True ...

Any fine print or fish hooks for the unsuspecting?

Not at all! And 4G is coming soon too, the WiFi is great, sure you've got to confirm each day but once you've confirmed for the day you're automatically connected.

I suggest if you're coming over, use the $60 credit incentive on the wifi page. Check the terms.
