To me its bordering on false advertising if they dome out with ad's just saying that its the headline rate as they did in the press release.

Too long have ISPs gotten away without mentioning the PSTN tax when advertising their Internet connections, and with the likes of orcon offering all up pricing and naked dsl on their network it makes the need for disclosure of the charges even more important.

"The comment regarding the ratio was more of a 'for example' response, the traffic management/shaping is much more complex than simply an allocation of bandwidth per customer.

As far as specifying what is/isn't shaped, I can confirm all traffic has the potential to be subject to traffic management with a particular focus on filesharing traffic. At this stage though, no there is no intention to shape gaming traffic given that most online games have low bandwidth requirements."

With regards to traffic shaping, at what point is the traffic shaped and does it depend on what your ‘normal’ speed is?

For example, say 50% of the people on the plan have a 1.5Mb/s average connection (i.e. not cabinitised), whilst the other 50% are getting 10+Mb/s (ADSL2+).

If they all transfer to Big time, and use the same type of traffic, does the shaping effect as a % of their connection speed, as an absolute value, or as a smoothing effect? i.e. will the people on 1.5Mb/s speed see a smaller decline in speed than those with a 10Mb/s connection (% decline)? Or will both of their speeds drop by, say, 1Mb/s (absolute value) or will the person on 1.5Mb/s see no drop at all (smoothing overall traffic)?

(not sure if I have explained it very well there – I want to know the likely impact of smoothing on different existing speeds)

I ask because my connection is only around 1.5mb/s anyway (and won’t be cabinitised for 2 years) so I whether I switch to big time depends on this quite a lot.

so it's only 128kb/s upload? that's a bit miserable isn't it? You'd think they'd offer at least 512kb/s

Big Time is full up and downstream. If you are on a DSL1 connection, it will be a maximum upload of 768k, if you are on DSL2+ it will be up to 1mbit.

as long as during the peak times its still fast enough to load web pages quickly ill be jumping on the band wagon just do the download during the night doesnt bother me
so when we are on off peak time do we still get full speed? or is it depending on the other users then to?

I get the feeling that they will do what slingshot do
- Cache everything
- If you transfer more than 10mb in ~1min you are throttled to 360k untill your connection falls below a threshold
- Telecom would go further and throttle p2p down as much as possible.

This still allows for good speedtest results and surfing which i guess would suit most people quite well.

from what im reading i doubt you will get great speeds from P2P anytime they will really shape the torrent traffic till its hardly moving , over the years i have discovered i want constant speed over huge amounts of data, IE i want to be able to download a torrent or file any time at a good speed so its not for me , i just hope every big torrent and file downloader joins and makes it even better for me.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Im with vodafone at the moment on the 20gb and I double to it get 40gb but its never enough
and the wifes always complaining because we always seem to spend the last week of the month on 64kbs and she cant use facebook very well what a shame. So maybe I should just sign up to the 40gb telecom plan
as they are offering double data free untill the end of the year that would give me 80gb untill the end of the year atleast

Dont forget to check the contract and disconnection fees with that. I think it might be 24 months with a $150 early disconnect fee.

I have finished my term with vodafone so that will be fine
it says 12 months contract on the telecom website so that wouldnt be to bad means I would get 80gb untill the end of the year then back down to 40gb untill july next year.
I guess the only real question for me if they will slow the P2P torrents down on the big time plan
Is there anyway I can find this out for sure and what the speed would most likely be
If I could get 1mps on p2p files that might not bother me as much if I was getting unlimited internet

unlimited download but shaped to hell so you cant download anything large at decent speeds = no point as you probably wont have the speed to use more then 10-15Gb a month anyway.

Surely if unlimited plans are aimed at big data users it needs to be a decent speed so that it doesnt take a week to download a large file.

I'll be sticking to TCL cable 80GB per month full speed all the time. Its expensive but its better then going down to near dialup speed.

But it will be interesting to see how it pans out for early adopters and see how they fare as more users take it up.

I just switched to Big Time using the plan change link on the xtra.co.nz/usagemeter page. I will trial this plan for a month or two and decide whether or not I will change back after that. Below is the email confirmation which says 128kbps upload in two places. Some people have said that upload is max speed - where did they get that info from?

Mauricio said it was fs/fs, thats what he quoted after the conference call, and ive seen that on another article as well.. 128k upload, thats a shambles! as the big debate from eariler about maximum download rates on a 128k upload, in my expereince (on go large at present) 128k upload restricts you to 4mbs download..
Add the traffic shapping and you seriously may as well have called this plan: Go Large V2.. it will be identical in performance.. With us remaining go large users who never moved, they would have got there traffic management software working properly, which they have done so.. right on the dot, 11:30pm your torrents go up in speed from there weak ~30k, to ~100k.. Id imagine there isnt many people on go large anymore either so when all the users jump on you could be looking at worse speed for Big time.

Edit2: if your downloading torrents on go large during peak hours your speed browsing is heavily restricted, on top of that your torrents will only sit at 30k.. stop the torrents and you can browse fine, stream youtube without buffering etc. They must have some good packet inspection software that limits your connection if it detects any p2p traffic.. however rapidshare/megaupload etc rocket in at over 300k continuiously
