telecom's doing a double traffic special if sign up before end of august..
wonder how long switching takes.. maybe people can jump to orcon first, then jump back to telecom as new customer and get 80GB/month for 6months i guess..

afterwards it's dreadful dreadful 40GB/month for the rest of the contract.

Ideally, yes. But if I remeber correctly from the Terms and Conditions for the promotion, you'd have to be with another provider (ie away from Telecom) for at least 30 days.

It's a 12 month contract... and if I remember correctly, it's only $49 to break that contract after the 6 months... (or $99, my memory isn't what it used to be).

It's actually $199.

Oops my bad.

It was my understanding that you just pay for the price of the modem to disconnect (which WAS $199).

But since the price of the modem has decreased from $199 to $99, I thought that the disconnection fee went down too!

Not only that, 12 months used to be $99 and 24 months used to be $199... But I guess this promo demands a bit more than just a free modem.

Silly me!

You definitely can! Laughing

You can change your plan once per internet month (whatever internet cycle you have) for free.

Up or down, they don't penalise you.

I guess you can just put it on the 3GB plan if you plan to be away for a while :)

I'm using about 250gb per month. Definitely not staying with Telecom. Over to World net, they use telecom's lines and exchanges and still have an unlimited plan. Plus its cheaper... :)

I was using around 150-200GB per month with Telecom Big Time. Since switching to Slingshot a month ago I have just about used up my 25GB allowance, and used another 25GB in free off peak data. By scheduling my torrents to just run during the free data hours of 2am and 8am I have also reduced the time that I am seeding, and uploading.

I am guessing that a lot of people who have chewed through data on Big Time will have left their torrent program running 24/7, and the large amounts of data they were going through were possibly in a lot of cases mostly upload data.

In my case, I have not drastically altered my internet use since moving to Slingshot, and still can stay more or less within my data cap. Plus there's the added advantage that streaming video actually works!

Not saying this is the case with everybody, just my experience, but for those of you using a huge amount of data per month on big time, ask yourself how much of that was actually upload?

The 14th of August is approaching i have seen people mention that if we go past that data that Telecom has given us we will get charged the disconnection fee if we change to another ISP, is this true? because i am looking at my choices but not sure if i will make up my mind before that date.

If someone could give me more information on this it would be appreciated.

You definitely will if you change to another plan (or are changed) then switch/leave.
(I asked on Twitter, was told they'd look into it, and didn't receive a real response.)

Whether or not you'll be charged if you switch after the 13th but before they kick you off (if it's not the same date) is another story...

Hmm, I'll double check this for you and others tomorrow.  But as it stands now, I also have to agree with you that the "waiving" of early disconnection fees only applies if you leave Telecom before the plan change takes place.

The stupid thing about it is that, were it to be waived, I'd most likely stick with Telecom (for at least a month to see if we can stay under 50GB, otherwise for the rest of the year)

However, if staying means a termination fee, we'll be at least $100 better off switching to Orcon, as we'll be disconnecting at the end of the year when our lease expires.

EDIT: I know of at least one other person who's changing because of the same reason.
