BIGTIME UPLOAD SPEED

Hello all

Just to confirm that BigTime is full upstream speed. I have queried this, and we are aware of the email confirmation showing 128k, this is now being corrected within our system.

garvani: Mauricio said it was fs/fs, thats what he quoted after the conference call, and ive seen that on another article as well.. 128k upload, thats a shambles! as the big debate from eariler about maximum download rates on a 128k upload, in my expereince (on go large at present) 128k upload restricts you to 4mbs download..
Add the traffic shapping and you seriously may as well have called this plan: Go Large V2.. it will be identical in performance.. With us remaining go large users who never moved, they would have got there traffic management software working properly, which they have done so.. right on the dot, 11:30pm your torrents go up in speed from there weak ~30k, to ~100k.. Id imagine there isnt many people on go large anymore either so when all the users jump on you could be looking at worse speed for Big time.

Edit2: if your downloading torrents on go large during peak hours your speed browsing is heavily restricted, on top of that your torrents will only sit at 30k.. stop the torrents and you can browse fine, stream youtube without buffering etc. They must have some good packet inspection software that limits your connection if it detects any p2p traffic.. however rapidshare/megaupload etc rocket in at over 300k continuiously

So basicly you are saying 30k onpeak and 100k off peak is the fastest we are likley to receive?
on P2P downloads if thats the case id say im going to have to give it a miss

30k on peak no worries just stop the downloads during the day but if I can only get 100k during the night it would be a waste of time

OmniouS: ... I will trial this plan for a month or two and decide whether or not I will change back after that. ...

A number of people have mentioned trialling it and then possibly reverting back to the their old plans. Are Telecom not going to give the usual 12/24 month signup conditions? It would be nice if you could switch as and when you liked, as I could definitely do with unlimited downloads during August. I'm currently on the Total Home plan with a 20GB limit and hit the cap most months.

I just hate to think that after switching from Orcon and then XNet that my Telecom account is going to go the same way i.e. downhill.

Telecom website states you are allowed one plan change per month

"It's easy to switch to a new Telecom Broadband plan if you find your current plan no longer meets your needs. There is no cost to change your Telecom Broadband plan, and the change will be effective within two days. You can have one plan change per calendar month. To confirm the plan change has taken place please check the usage meter."

You can currently switch your xtra broadband plan once per month, for free. I assume that this will apply to the big time plan also.

OmniouS: I just switched to Big Time using the plan change link on the xtra.co.nz/usagemeter page. I will trial this plan for a month or two and decide whether or not I will change back after that. Below is the email confirmation which says 128kbps upload in two places. Some people have said that upload is max speed - where did they get that info from?

edit: removed email... copy paste fail

I don't see big time plan available yet on my usage meter/change plan.

geekiegeek: unlimited download but shaped to hell so you cant download anything large at decent speeds = no point as you probably wont have the speed to use more then 10-15Gb a month anyway.

Heh. My usage on Go Large ADSL1 for December was 170gb.

Shows that I don't check their site too often! I'll wait until August to switch, by which time the early adopters will have provided lots of feedback. Thanks.

It was at the bottom of the page for me. Maybe Telecom have removed it until Tuesday. It will be interesting to see if my plan switches over before then

Can you tell us what your modem sync speed is in a week so we can give them time to change your dsl profile if they are going to.

OK, I hope it doesn't change :) It's currently around 945Kbps / 15Mbps

And how many hours a day did you have to leave your PC running for. I average around 120GB per month and never leave my PC on over night and mostly only download on the weekends.

Talkiet:
garvani: oh no, good bye go large, youve served me well over the last few years :(.. Bigtime looks like a worthy successor though! :).. go large was limited to 3.5mbit down by the way

Incorrect - Go large was not limited to 3.5mbit down, either by profile, or by the nominal 128kbit up. It is perfectly possible to get just over 9mbit out of Go Large with the 128kbit upstream.

Cheers - N

Rather difficult with TCP however.

Also wasn't Go Large before ADSL2 was launched? How could you get 9mbit out of ADSL1? You can't even get 8mbit out of ADSL1 except in the lab

I think these plans will be very popular, considering what they describe it as is what most ISPs give you, and then have the cheek to charge you per gig as well...
