Finally got switched over… kind of. Told Slingshot to cut me off on November 17. Told Skinny to connect me on November 15. Got a text on the 15th from Tuatahi First Fibre saying that they had successfully activated my Skinny fibre connection (rural Hamilton).

Today, 17th, halfway through a teams meeting, internet cuts out. That’s the Slingshot half done. Connect Skinny modem, nothing. 1hr of troubleshooting over the phone with Skinny and still nothing.

Possibly my fault for choosing a date that didn’t line up with my last day with Slingshot? Anyway, hopefully starts working soon. Thankfully I can go back to work and use my computer there now that the Waikato region is in level 2.

Contact Skinny. They’ve taken over your connection and are now responsible for any support moving forward.

With dates not matching Ill quickly assume its a port 2 activation for the new con, though any rep would see that right away and I assume you've already tried this too.

Yep no luck. Lady from Skinny had me testing on port 2 with different cables, different ethernet connected devices, and different modems (this was me mucking around with an old Netcomm NF18ACV). I repeated the tests on port 1 once I got off the phone with her. Tried making a connection straight from laptop to ONT and still nothing. I’ll call Tuatahi First Fibre and see what they reckon.

Skinny should be the one escalating to the UFB lines company. They own the relationship, end customers should not need to engage them.

Completed my move from BigPipe 100/100 to Skinny 900/500 yesterday. Observations:

- The emails leading up to the change weren’t very clear, particularly if you were not up to speed on how fibre works. Skinny email didn’t mention a cutover date even though I specifically requested one, email from enable said you’ll be transferred asap, probably 3-5 days (wrong), and both companies’ emails read like I was getting a new connection, not simply changing ISP.
- The notice period issue mentioned lots in this thread is definitely confusing, to the ISPs benefit…
- Had to contact Skinny at 630pm on the day of transfer as nothing had happened at that point. Their CSR on chat pushed it though at 7pm and the actual change happened at about 730pm
- Skinny didn’t mention ONT ports but I got a text from enable telling me the new service was live on eth2 port on the ONT, so it appears they decided to liven the second port, rather than switch eth1 from BigPipe to Skinny.
- Once I realised this and switched the cable into eth2 on the ONT I was sorted.
- eth1 hadn’t been turned off at that point, I assume it will be as my BigPipe connection has been cancelled (at least, I gave them notice and they confirmed this, so I hope it has been)
- I couldn’t get full DL speeds when speed testing, but after reading threads on GZ I updated my Ethernet drivers on the W10 testing machine and used the Speedtest app, not browser, and managed 930/530, which is great
- The Skinny modem stayed in the box the whole time, my USG picked up the Skinny connection with no issues and no change in settings at all, it didn’t even need a reboot.

All in all, happy with the result, but I can see the process being quite confusing for those not as clear about the different roles the RSP and ISP play in the changeover process…

The speed test function on the USG only shows about 150/150 to a Mothership server in Auckland, I assume there’s no way to change the USG Speedtest server? I’ll just ignore it for now.

Edit: I now realise via Google that the built in USG speed test isn’t worth anything, so I’ll turn it off and ignore it forever.

razor2000nz: Have signed up, was with 2degrees, they couldn’t match, best they could do was $200 credit + amazon video and $10 discount p/m

Thanks for doing the hard yards with 2Degrees CS to find that out @razor2000nz; I was contemplating doing something similar, but agreed, that deal, no es bueno.

I might have considered taking it since I've been with 2degrees for a few years now and they have been good for the most part, but little things like them continuing to charge me at at the old, higher price for the Ultimate Unlimited broadband plan instead of the new everyday price ($4 p/m difference!); on the other hand, they recently scrapped the $30 p/m mobile plan I'm on to push me to a higher cost plan and try to justify it with more data that I won't use.

Again, little things.

Hola Skinny!

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Yep fair. Just had good experience in the past calling the fibre company directly. Last time I had an issue, the Slingshot > Tuatahi Fibre method was on day 3 with hardly any action. Called Tuatahi Fibre and the issue was fixed within an hour.

Day 2.5 Skinny > Tuatahi. Technician is supposed to come out at some point to look at the ONT box. Hopefullly tomorrow but not holding my breath.

My change went through this morning seamlessly. Skinny confirmed the connection would swap over this morning at 6am so put through the disconnection request to Bigpipe for today. Got woken up by the kids before 6am claiming they couldn't access YouTube, but the internet was working by the time I got out of bed. Router logs show a new IP address was assigned at 5:59am.

Was worried Id have to plug in the Skinny router, but my Edgerouter with Bigpipe settings was fine.

My connection change to skinny is due on 30th November. When can I expect the skinny modem to be shipped and delivered by?

So did I. I think I just missed out on their new Flexi modem.

@martyyn did you recieve an email from Skinny about the order being confirmed? Only automated email I recieved from skinny was straight after I signed up on website stating the plan I had picked and what my connection date will be.

I did recieve another email from Skinny CSR later that day asking to confirm who my current provider was to which I replied and they also acknowledged my reply in a follow up email. This was all done on 1st November.

2. Payment confirmed.

3. Connection data confirmed.

and two days later

4. Modem incoming (Skinny Smart Modem).
