Delorean: I think for most users on BT, they are after a plan that simply can't be offered for the price they want to pay. Telecom could give them 1000GB pm - for a price.

My 2c worth

Can't or won't?

Can't in the context of an unlimited plan for $60 pm, not sure about won't, that something only telecom can answer.

I think personally the caps telecom have are low considering most users do consume more data as the speeds have improved in the last 2 yrs. that's the result in the improvement of their service. I think the data caps haven't increased accordingly.

I think most users of BT - such as myself would gladly pay $60/mo for 60GB + $1/GB thereafter....I would even take that deal at reduced but guaranteed speeds. I don't need balls to the wall speeds all the time but I DO need the net to be usable 100% of the time, plus be able to use streaming content etc. I would imagine most users are in the same boat. My needs can't be that unique.

I would continue to pay $60 a month for only 60GB, I would just curb my downloading and be more selective. 1GB is roughly 3 x 40 minute TV shows, so if it was $1 for extra GBs that would be acceptable but not the 2, 3, or $4 some providers charge for extra blocks of data.

Coming home from the UK where I had an uncapped 8mbps service for roughly $35NZ, Big Time was the nearest I could get and I was happy with it. I dread having to go back to capped service like I did with Telstra. I will see what the alternatives are before I pull the plug on Telecom. To be fair, they have been pretty good/reliable despite the bad rap people give them.

Personally I would be happy with their current 40GB plan (what is it, $70 per month?) if the extra data only cost $1/GB.

A spade is a spade. Telecom IS a monopoly! It is what it is. The customer should at least benefit from it somehow. Plus, if their wholesale prices reflected their market reality then other ISP's would benefit too...

Its at times like this you have to quote Bart Simpson "You're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't.

As an alternative, why doesn't Telecom [instead of scrapping it and losing a load of customers] just stop new people switching to Big Time, then offer current Big Time users an incentive to switch to a different plan and let Big Time run it's course with ever diminishing user-numbers as people either leave Telecom, move house or change plans as their needs suit. That way they don't p-off existing Big Time users who want to remain on big time.
But then if they don't even want to manage the plan any more, it is probably easier for them to kill it.

I have seen mobile providers do what i have suggested when they wanted to end ridiculously cheap contracts. I had a cheap one that I just kept renewing and as long as I didn't upgrade my handset [with new contract] they had to keep me on the same contract rate.

As has been said before, you can't guarantee DSL speeds. :)

Well, telecom wholesale do.. a whole 32-64kbit/s :P

DravidDavid: Telecom are pooring tons of money into this ADSL 2+ role out and I don't think Telecom will want to rate plans since they can't use ADSL 2+ as a selling point. I think that was mentioned earlier.

I think it would just be easier if they kept BigTime as it is set up and changed the Full speed up and down rate to 2mbps/1mbps shaped 24/7.

I don't know how minor of a tweak that is...But if I was behind the table of deciders, that is what I would vote for, considering everyones speed on BigTime was and still is roughly 2.0 to 2.5mbps 24/7 anyway.

I agree and further I think splitting peak/off peak is insane. It is a total PITA for the USER to manage. Most users IMHO want simple plans that have certainty to them. I don't mind paying more for my broadband but Pro just does not work for me. I still maintain that plans that equate to $1/GB all up are the way to go, ie:

$20/20GB +$1/GB thereafter
$40/40GB +$1/GB thereafter
$60/60GB +$1/GB thereafter

Simple, elegant and I'm certain very profitable for Telecom....

So what would I pay if I have a 3GB plan :D

$20 - that would be the minimum offered...if you only used 3GB then they are up trumps on you. Just like the guys on BT that only used 20GB/mo average. LOL. $20/mo for broadband all up is bloody cheap.

Interesting story in the herald how 3 of the major ISPs are going to share equipment in exchanges to lower costs.

tdgeek: ----------I would like to see some sort of 'faimly' plan introduced into the line up, to cater for those of us who are either in a flatting situation or families with multiple computer users.---------------

That was the whole point of Big Time and Go Large!

exactly

btw not sure why so many of you are trying to come up with capped data plans.

We already have those... if we wanted to go on one we would.
Truth is data cap plans dont suit flatting / large family use environments.

These are environments, that need alot of data, not necessarily large speeds / premium connection / service.

Go large & Big Time were great for this. Need one of them back or an appropriate alternative.

Because as evidenced by the demise of both Go Large and BigTime, unlimted plans in NZ aren't sustainable.

Quite so.

But I myself was a telecom supporter, but you have to draw the line somewhere of : sympathy to their own fault for network failings / angering customers etc.

This latest move by them isnt going to keep me as a customer.

Not because im pissed off. But simply because their other plans have too smaller data caps to meet our needs and we dont want to pay anymore money for over data charges.

I can only hope telecom reviews their decision / brings another plan before kicking us off big time.

Telecom have already said that is NOT going to happen so we are proposing alternatives that won't break the bank for high data users. I repeat, uncapped plans are no longer on the table as an alternative so stop asking for them. These requests will fall on deaf Telecom ears.

You ask why we are coming up with capped plan solutions? Because the current plans do not suit us and uncapped plans are off the table...make sense?

Possibly because the data vampires were allowed to suck it dry ?
