How can you "abuse" a plan that's unlimited?

moshpit77: How can you "abuse" a plan that's unlimited?

I'm pretty sure they didn't intend for people to mass download using P2P/torrents. I mean, even amongst my friends, I have a few that were downloading over 700GB per month by abusing the traffic management in various ways.

Paying the same price for a 20GB plan (which was cheap as, as far as unlimited is concerned), I think it was abusing.

If they intended people to download ~700GB per month, I'm sure the price would've been in the hundreds.

100GB per month? Abuse?
We were doing around 400GB before even finding out about the work-arounds.

TBH, I'd rather they had a fair-usage policy and hadn't limited it in the way that they did (causing streaming, Steam, downloads, etc to run awfully slow or not at all. 32kBps is hardly broadband, yet that was what I'd get for most HTTP downloads)

Their traffic management, which was their side of the deal (remember "we'll slow traffic down at peak periods") didn't work. They failed.

I was torrenting at super speeds while I couldn't log in to Gmail because they had http throttled.

My 200GB per month was without any workarounds... so I was using, not abusing. I think that was pretty fair, I was getting all I could eat from an all you can eat buffet so to speak. Playing by the rules.

Yeah, I'm not saying that it was the best idea. But again, this is NZ. If they had a "fair use" policy, it would be the same as a normal usage data plan. (eg. "don't download more than 200GB/month" instantly makes it a 200GB plan).

One can't have one's cake and eat it too.

I'm not sure about you, but Youtube wasn't slow for me. Which was good enough, and putting on torrents always slowed everything else down.

Anyway, I'm also annoyed this is gone... But there's nothing to do about it, and only proves once again that real "unlimited" internet will take some time to come into NZ. (In an affordable package, anyway).

If they combined the fair usage policy with some decent hard shaping (rate limiting of the entire connection, possibly with the exception of traffic with a national round-trip) it wouldn't be a regular xGB plan, but it also would be anywhere as annoying and shouldn't fail as hard as Big Time did.

They could also have had an unlimited plan that has speeds reduced at certain stages.
eg: FS/FS to 10GB, 5Mbit/FS to 20GB, 4Mbit to 30GB, 2Mbit to 50GB, 1Mbit to 100GB, 512k to 200GB, 256k to 300GB, 128k to 600GB, 64k for the rest of the month (with the option to buy "FS" blocks any time during the month that are used before any current GBs at any specified speed.)

=D I guess we think quite alike! I had the same conversation with a couple of friends a week ago!

I totally agree with both the ideas, but I guess we'll have to see. I can't be certain, but Telecom has to be (hopfully) thinking up a new sort of plan to try and fill the void that Big Time has left. The Pro plan (even with the reduced costs for over-usage) is nowhere near filling that void.

And with that, I'm off for the night.

I'll post again tomorrow with some information about the contracting.

Nice to hear that I didn't think up something that no one is interested in :)

I have been emailing Telecom Customer Online Care and have received the following:

Dear shadybrothers

Thank you for contacting Telecom.

You can cancel the Big Time plan up until the 29th August.

I can confirm if you were to remove the Broadband from your line and keep only your landline with Telecom, or just make changes to your Broadband bolt on plan (with Total Home) then there will be no disconnection/ early termination fees for this.

If you would like to cancel all your services with Telecom due to the change with Big Time then the disconnection/early termination fee would not be applied to you.

I trust this clarifies matters for you. If we can be of any further assistance please feel free to ask.

Kind regards,
Customer Care Online

Does that mean if u cancel after that day you won't face disconnection fees either?

i do not think that people will go away as there is no ISP providing 100s Gb usage. Waiving disconnection fee means they are not forcing you to stay with them...

Are you serious? Xnet, Maxnet, Orcon, Slingshot, Snap, ICONZ, (to name a few) all offer 100GB plans (or blocks which can add up to over 100GB)

I'd like to know this also, as that reply seems to be specifically avoiding this.

Sounds like you'll be fine if you leave before the end of the first billing period that ends after the 13th.

Going to use it to my advantage as I am moving residence to a place that has an existing Telecom connection where mine will not be needed.

Hi Timtim, How are you finding the speeds? Is is more or less same ? / or better?

I called slingshot this morning, 80% in mind that i will change but then when i talked to the CS Rep they told that they may change the port and cant guarantee the speeds which i am currently getting thru telecom now.

this set me back a bit and i didnt have the heart to change it over. more confusions. And more so cause when i saw one of my friends yday, he told me he was with slingshot and when he changed to telecom he really got good speeds, and he didnt want to go back to slingshot.

can new slingshot users here give more feedback on speeds.
