btw not sure why so many of you are trying to come up with capped data plans.

We already have those... if we wanted to go on one we would.
Truth is data cap plans dont suit flatting / large family use environments.

These are environments, that need alot of data, not necessarily large speeds / premium connection / service.

Go large & Big Time were great for this. Need one of them back or an appropriate alternative.

Because as evidenced by the demise of both Go Large and BigTime, unlimted plans in NZ aren't sustainable.

Possibly because the data vampires were allowed to suck it dry ?

This thread is about PLAN SUGGESTIONS for Telecom only. How about you come up with a plan then? Oh, and it can't simply be 'offer an uncapped plan like BT' because Telecom have said that is NOT an option.

My argument is soley that not everyone is needing fast 8-24mbps connections/
Slower shaped , but unlimited ones would suffice certain groups of users.

Either this or Telecom ease up on how much they drop us down to after data cap is used up.

You may believe that but Telecom do not - they have SAID THAT ALREADY. And since they are the ones offering up the plans to us, wouldn't it be best to suggest plans that at least have a shot at being considered? They are NOT going to offer an uncapped plan at any speed or price point, full stop. So stop harping on about it.

even if you limit speed to 1Mbps that is still theoretical 316GB per month of downloads (if my maths is right) for people who have stuff constantly going. add uploads onto that (which will be significant given how torrents work) and the leechers problem still exists.

I tried one month on the 20GB FS/FS and went over; the [punishment] speed provided after the cap was reached was all but unusable, I'd say it was dial up speed circa 1997. Useable for nothing much more than email.

Mind you I find the managed speed on the Big Time plan hopeless for things like streaming video [except lowest bitrate] It is uncapped but man it can be slow.
Free download manager helps a lot with mp3 podcast downloads etc.

I would be happy with 20-40GB FS/FS with a reduction to a reasonable [albeit] much slower speed when exceeded. Or reduced during at peak times.

And since we are the ones offering up the cash to telecom, wouldn't it be best to offer plans that at least have a shot at being considered worth the money? Given that the vast majority of internet traffic in NZ is from off shore (greater than 85%) I do not believe that plans with no data caps and no management is viable for any ISP to provide.

Datacaps is something we are just going to have to live with until that changes or the the cost of importing that date drops considerably or users habits change.

When you see users downloaded in excess of 500GB in a month I am not surprised it was revisited by Telecom.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

So they should have implimented and enforced a fair usage policy like every other company offerring an unlimited amount anything. Texts, Minutes, salad whatever.

If they had curbed the amount of data the top 20% were using, it might not have come to this.

They should copy the plans that Optus released awhile back

for $49.99 120gb. 50GB peak/ 70GB off peak

for $59.99 150gb. 75GB peak / 75GB off peak

for $69.99 170gb. 85GB peak / 85GB off peak

Not that hard to make up, simple usage for a family using youtube/facebook with online gaming on xbox 360/ps3 and pc. nice and cheap.
These plans will not overload telecom and im sure if they want you could maybe buy bigger data chunks for people that cant curve their usage but get charged more for it or slow them down if they go over cap.
Optus also do 2 unlimited plans but you get slowed down after you have downloaded a certain amount, these plans are more expensive than the others but could be another alternative for heavy users.

Also Telecom could maybe start up a file server and host big game patches and demo files that could not impact data usage, Kinda like what Internode does with their customers. These small changes could win them a lot more customers and make more of a happy user base.

Just needed to add my input, I got tired of seeing 20gb peak plans with unlimited offpeak. Most people in my family are usually awake during the day, thus using the internet during peak times where a majority of data is used then. 20gb or even 30gb is not that great and could easily be done if not monitored.

DravidDavid: Telecom are pooring tons of money into this ADSL 2+ role out and I don't think Telecom will want to rate plans since they can't use ADSL 2+ as a selling point. I think that was mentioned earlier.

I think it would just be easier if they kept BigTime as it is set up and changed the Full speed up and down rate to 2mbps/1mbps shaped 24/7.

I don't know how minor of a tweak that is...But if I was behind the table of deciders, that is what I would vote for, considering everyones speed on BigTime was and still is roughly 2.0 to 2.5mbps 24/7 anyway.

I agree and further I think splitting peak/off peak is insane. It is a total PITA for the USER to manage. Most users IMHO want simple plans that have certainty to them. I don't mind paying more for my broadband but Pro just does not work for me. I still maintain that plans that equate to $1/GB all up are the way to go, ie:

$20/20GB +$1/GB thereafter
$40/40GB +$1/GB thereafter
$60/60GB +$1/GB thereafter

Simple, elegant and I'm certain very profitable for Telecom....

So what would I pay if I have a 3GB plan :D

$20 - that would be the minimum offered...if you only used 3GB then they are up trumps on you. Just like the guys on BT that only used 20GB/mo average. LOL. $20/mo for broadband all up is bloody cheap.

$20? Yes I can only wish. LOL. Actually if it is that cheap I prefer mobile data - I would pay $50 for a 4GB plan contract.

Doesn't Telecom charge $39.95 for a 3GB plan? Pretty good deal then. Half price. Yeah .....

Yes I was thinking along those lines too. I heard that people struggle off at peak and off peak.
Very nice for family packages and offpeak for the high users.

I would of liked a 2 plan package. One as the above for high users. Maybe price the above a bit more expensive - being Telecom.

Optus is only for areas with their lines right? Optus is not ADSL right?
The above link is also for Australia? Too. So yeah raise the price by 33% or so ....

I have another plan just for the family. Maybe $50-60 plan with more data with no allocation for offpeak or maybe a discount price for offpeak. Typical family isn't gonna get up 4am and watch youtube.

Off peak usage isn't about physically using the internet in the wee hours. It is typically for torrent users as P2P programs like uTorrent/Azureus etc have schedulers that let you set the hours during which they operate or at what speed they operate up and down at different times of the day. For example, you could set it to download and stop when cmplete during peak times and upload only between 2am and 9am.

There need to be plans that suit all groups of users.

I propose the following plans:

$20 for 15GB
$40 for 50GB
$60 for 120GB
$120 for 400GB

It should also be the up to the account holder whether or not the plan has reduced speeds after reaching the limit or $1/GB.

I understand that hence I mentioned a 2 plan option. One that is like the Optus package but priced accordinly for the NZ market 20-33% more before FX conversion. Ie., $50AU might work out to be about $70-80NZ. Which is good for any households with torrent usage or whatever in the late / early hours.

But there should be a plan for the most typical family who do not use internet at all at the odd hours. Some families and households may only use the net after work or school and turn it off when you go to sleep. Maybe a $60 plan for that.

But then again it puts the pressure on the Pro Plan which Telecom provides 40GB, LOL. And I understand you cannot provide a reduce speed. I mean what's the diff between a 80-100GB FS/128 or FS/FS $50-60 vs a $70 (?) for a FS/128 or FS/FS 40GB plan. And the guys want discounted $1/GB unit. It makes the ridicule of the Pro Plan.

IMO with the other plans available now. You cannot just say hey a new replacement is 80-100 or 200GB whatever for $50-60 and no fair usage policy cos you get a stipulated GB size to use. It makes a mockery of the Pro Plan. Unless you change the pro plan or all their other plans.
