I'm not sure anyone will be able to give a definitive answer, but I'll put it out there for comments.

When I was with Telecom my download speed was always about 9.5Mb/s, then a year ago I changed to Orcon's 'Best Deal Ever' offer and my speed went up to 14.5Mb/s where its been since. I know that I'm connected to an exchange and not a cabinet.

With my contract with Orcon due to finish in a few days, and with Telecom increasing the monthly caps soon I can get a hell of a lot more for a lot less money than staying with Orcon, but just wondering if I'm likely to go back to a slower speed like I was before I switched?

That would depend on a lot of factors- I used to be on orcon and I shifted to hassle-free (imo) telecom a few years back and my speeds actually increased. I was on orcon LLU beforehand..

Actually, thinking back, do Orcon use 6db snr on their LLU gear? Chorus use 12 though there are ways to get around this with various routers. That might explain the higher speed, but I'm not entirely sure it would account for 5Mbps?

@snnet:
6dB vs 12 dB noise margin usually only makes 1-2Mbit difference in line rate.

@corksta
Post the stats from the status page in your modem admin ui eg: noise margin, downstream line attenuation... expected downstream line rate can be guesstimated from those stats.
