Well the time has come to upgrade my phone. Been trying to not do this as I need something rugged (ie. can handle a fall from a phone pole) and anything that is worth having these days has a touch screen -would far prefer a flip top with buttons lol.
Anyway, I saw the samsung xcover in a boat magazine and it looked awesome!! The IP67 rating is what impressed me the most. Just wondering if anyone actually has/used one of these and can comment on it's performance. Also, I shouldn't have any problems buying this off an overseas site right? It is the same phone just in a different country ay?

i own first generation defy and that phone is rock solid. dropped a few metres onto concrete, submerged in lake taupo and still works just fine (over a year now).

since you posted this in telecom forum, i guess you will be using it on XT network? the most important thing is to make sure that the phone support both WCDMA 850 & 2100 (ignore GSM/2G network)

Just gotta say, most of those phones will crack the screen with a fall from the phone pole!

The Xcover is fine, if a little slow, the Defy+ will probably be better suited to your job, but you'll want an Otterbox case for it :). The screens are usually the first thing to go on the rugged phones. That and the hardish case on the Defy.

Get an Otterbox if you are working at heights. I got mine for a Galaxy S2, dropped it from 5M while climbing up a straddle(container mover), and it just scratched up the case! Definitely recommend them

i won't bother with case if you are getting moto defy.. the phone is tough as! will you wear two condoms just to be safe? of course not right?

Haha, I prefer my phones to be naked ;)

Accidentally had a Defy screen smash a few months back, simple drop, face down, ever since then I wouldn't use a Defy without one. Might have just been bad luck though. The Sony Xperia I replaced it with has been doing alright though, apart from the screen size(for my brother)

Really don't like cases. I begrudgingly put a very thin silicone case on my ipod just to protect the stainless lol. So wouldn't be keen to make these massive phones bigger than they already are. These days I don't climb poles very often if im being honest, I just like using that as a good guage to test my phones toughness lol.

I forgot about the Defy, and also didn't know there was a + version.

I think I need to have a play with each of these and see what I like.

My mate has a Defy and he works in a railway depot.
A few weeks after he got it he cracked the bottom of the screen so it is something to watch out for on this model.

Have played on the x-cover liked it but I found the screen res a little lower than I'd like.

But I prefer it to the Defy mainly because I prefer TouchWiz (Samsung Android software skin) to the android 2.2 MotoBlur (Motorola's skin).

In saying that Motorola have cleaned the skin for android 2.3 on the Defy+ - Its not as intrusive.

With the Defy's beware that Motorola have already said that none of the Defy's will be getting an update.
