I have a strange problem with my Telcom BB and Geekzone. At least half of the times I attempt to connect to the Geekzone forums each day (around 20+ times) the site is unobtainable and just times out. On the times it works, e.g. 10 minutes later it's fast and fine. It's been like this for the last few weeks and is extremely frustrating.

I notice when I run Neotrace,  my connection is always routed through Tokyo, i.e. g7-0-0.tkcr4.global-gateway.net.nz [210.55.202.50]  which seems strange as I believe Geekzone are hosted at Orcon. I've had intermittently unobtainable sites for about a year now but never something as consistant as this.

Here's a tracert to www.geekzone.co.nz with my static IP obscured.

Tracing route to www.geekzone.co.nz [202.175.128.164]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.254
2 30 ms 30 ms 30 ms 219-89-**-*.dialup.xtra.co.nz [219.89.**.*]
3 29 ms 30 ms 29 ms mdr-fid-dom.akcr10.global-gateway.net.nz [202.50.238.50]
4 28 ms 27 ms 29 ms ae4-20.akcr10.global-gateway.net.nz [202.50.238.49]
5 29 ms 28 ms 29 ms g7-0-0.tkcr4.global-gateway.net.nz [210.55.202.50]
6 28 ms 29 ms 33 ms orcon-dom.tkcr4.global-gateway.net.nz [203.96.66.102]
7 29 ms 29 ms 29 ms xe-1-0-0.cre1.nct.orcon.net.nz [121.98.9.13]
8 29 ms 30 ms 28 ms 60.234.20.46
9 * * * Request timed out.
10 30 ms 30 ms 29 ms mail.geekzone.co.nz [202.175.128.164]

Trace complete.
I've spoken to 2nd tier support in the past when I've had similar problems but they've been unable to help as the problem was so intermittent. I'm hoping someone from Telecom or in the forums here can help now.

You inferred Tokyo out of g7-0-0.tkcr4.global-gateway.net.nz ?

LOL it's not in Japan, it's in Auckland as I recall. 'tk' means something other than what you think it does.

The route you quote looks fine, nothing wrong with it. You need to be a little more specific about 'unobtainable'... when it's 'down' is it that you're failing to resolve the hostname (DNS failure) or is it that you can't open a TCP session on Port 80? Does it happen with any other sites? Noting you're transiting from Xtra to Orcon to reach GZ, are other Orcon hosted sites (perhaps their own server) also intermittantly unreachable?

And are you really on dialup?

Oh and if your ISP helpdesk can't help you, have you considered changing ISPs? If you have to resort to using a public web forum to get help, perhaps their support options are failing...

No I'm not on dialup as I mentioned in my previous post. If you're on Telecom BB, a Tracert reports it that way. Neotrace reports the following info for g-7-0-0-tkcr4.global-gateway.net.nz

IP Address: 210.55.202.50
Location: Tokyo (35.678N, 139.772E)
Network NETWAY-6

Maybe it's simply an incorrect listing somewhere.

I'm simply attempting to access geekzone with either IE8, Firefox or Chrome from any PC here. Same result.

In all cases after a long period of attempting to load the site, the usual "interupted" message appears.

Geekzone is hosted with Datacom, not Orcon (it never was, before that it was ICONZ for years):

The 30ms to Geekzone seems pretty normal.

As for "loading", could you please tell me the IP address you get for cdn.geekz1.com? Perhaps your connection is having problems resolving the IP for our resources instead?

I've done a small change and you should keep using it as normal then let us know how it goes.

29ms to Tokyo would be pretty awesome.... sadly, it would be more like 200ms.  29ms barely gets you past DSL.

Thanks Mauricio. I've been out all afternoon so have only just been able to try. Seems the problem still exists.
A tracert to nzcdn.geeknz1.com gives me an IP of 202.175.128.164

Ok, if the problem is still there then it's something different - the IP you are getting for that domain is for the server in AKL, so it shouldn't be an international problem.

However... Last month I got an email from Kordia saying they had problems accessing Geekzone. Here's the email:

"We suspect an assymetrical routing via different firewalls is happening when accessing www.geekzone.co.nz page. The outbound traffic is going via WIX (Wellington Internet exchange) but we think that return traffic may come in via APE (Auckland peering exchange)."
