Hi folks,

I'm looking for a bit of info regarding the Telecom network and Android phones.

I have a Telecom phone on contract with an Xperia X10 mini handset.  It works just fine except it's not the easiest handset to use.

Anyway, my son has given me an HTC Wildfire (1st gen) handset with Froyo Android version.  He tells me that it's unlocked.  He has flashed it back to the original "vanilla" software and restored the Factory Settings.

When I put my Telecom SIM in the phone it is recognised (for example I can see my contacts on the SIM), but I get "No service" and can't make calls.

I ran the Wildfire's IMEI through the Telecom online checker and it says it should be fine.

My son used the phone on 2degrees and Vodafone without problems.  If I put a 2degrees SIM in then the phone seems to work OK (don't have a Voda one to test it with).

If I do a network search with my Telecom SIM installed the results are Vodafone and NZ Comms (which I understand is 2degrees).

I've been through all the settings, checked every web page I can find but to no avail.

What am I missing?  Will this ever work?  Slightly reluctant to get into dialogue with Telecom directly since the phone is under contract with my employer so it may get complicated.

Thanks in advance for any help/comments/etc,

Cheers

Mark

Sounds like the phone is not XT compatible.
Meaning it doesn't have 850MHz HSDPA services onboard.
It may have 2100MHZ (which is used by XT and Voda in some areas). But you're probably not in one of those.

What they said. Probably a phone from Vodafone (900/2100) which is not the same as Telecom (850/2100).

2100Mhz 3G on XT is used for infill capacity only and not coverage

Thanks for the replies folks.

I suspect that you are all correct but the Telecom handset checker (http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/mobile/ournetwork/phonecompatibility/) says that my phone supports WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100MHz.

Puzzled.

If he's flashed the phone it might be using the wrong radio software.

Ooooo, good point.  I don't have any idea how to check but I'll see what I can find.  Thanks.

It's wrong, unless you have the newer Wildfire S, the older Wildfire as above doesn't support XT.  And XT doesn't fall back onto other networks 3G

The handset checker is often wrong especially for non NZ models.
My Telstra HTC Desire A8183 works fine on telecom yet used to say that it didn't. It now says that it does support telecom.
However when i tried with another phone that i knew that wasnt telecom compatible, it said it was.
