I just got the Samsung 3210* (GT-E3210B) and it says it can handle up to a 8GB microSDHC card, "depending on memory card manufacturer and type".

is there any info on what brands or types to avoid? is class 6 suitable for mp3 player use? the prices vary quite widely, is there any retailer you'd recommend? (and do I need special headphones for this? ... no 3.5mm plug?)

*thanks to Telecom's wise strategy of phoning me to offer a good deal on one.

I've been browsing supposedly "e3210 accessories" on this website
www.mytrendyphone.co.uk/shop/memory-card-micro-43288c1.html
...they offer a 'compatibility list' on most of these product's pages ...but none I've encountered so far list the e3210.

is there not a Samsung or Telecom website that can be more helpful?

The specs on Telecoms website says that the phone has a 3.5mm headphone jack so any pair of headphones will work.
Class regarding to sd cards is the speed of them, the higher the number the faster the sd card, as far as music goes any class should suffice.
I've only had experience with Adata and Sandisk micro sd cards, I've had one fail of each brand out of the 10-20 I've had over the last four or five years. I wouldn't rate one over the other and cannot comment on other brands. Kingston do have a good reputation for their memory products but I've not owned any.
I wouldn't expect you to have any incompatibility issues with any 8gb micro sdhc card.

Yep, any class would be fine. Speed comes in when you are wanting to do things such as full HD video recording.... or watching full HD video on micro SD.

::facepalm:: ...for some reason I thought it looked weird (like some old car charger type plug or something), but you are correct...3.5 plugs in just fine.

thanks. it did seem weird to me that for some reason these things should be less universal/easy to get components for than an ordinary computer.
