Telecom Xtra have had a television ad running for a few weeks now to remind us that their plans are now double the data etc . It's showing a typical  family sitting down to watch a movie of some kind. Grandma tries to pass popcorn to the young man of the family who is viewing the movie via  laptop in some other part of the house, country, world.

Assuming this is some kind of paid service (sky, rented movie etc) would  the "rebroadcast" of this over the internet (lets say via skype or justin.tv) be illegal or is Telecom now suggesting I can get my closest 300 family members from all over the world and show them my Saturday night family feature ?

Yes this is a silly nit pick, however Im just interested in everyones general opinion on the matter if what it "seems" to be is true.

Cheers
Lee

Who's to say the overseas person isn't just watching a DVD and the family in NZ are streaming it in time with him?

I believe the intent is to show that its possible to have someone remotely viewing the same thing as you are due to the fact that the data is now included/cheap etc a "so would you not do it" mindset.

Its the situation portrayed that suggests it some kind of riveting viewing above and beyond someone's old home movie of the last family birthday party.

I did say above that it was a silly nit pick, but Im sorry you don't feel that the general topic raised is worthy of some level of intelligent discussion.

1. It's an Advertisment
2. You don't know if they're watching a T.V. show, some paid for content, a movie of Dad cleaning his car
3. It's an Advertisment
4. Being nit-picky I find the ads for exercise equipment misleading when the normal/overweight person morphs to some god/goddess
5. They're both advertising
6. Would you actually sit down and watch a movie and have some member of your extended family watch it with you using the webcam on your laptop???? Seriously??
7. If you believe in advertising maybe you would...
8. How does the Guy sailing in the middle of the Ocean buy the winning Lotto ticket? (seriously for Wilson to wash ashore in India or Sri Lanka he has to be an awful long way from a Lotto shop
8. It's advertising.... don't ya love it? (or not.)

If you want to cling on to that fantasy a multidraw ticket can get you 10 weeks out to sea :).

But seriously though, I can't believe you'd even try to draw a parallel between a family member somewhere watching a movie with grandma and grandpa over Skype and watching a movie with "300 of your closest friends" (in the words of Tui, "Yeah Right!").

I'm sure the Advertising Standards Authority would disagree with this statement.

If you REALLY want to nit-pick, you should see the poster at Telecom for the 4G network "you can download  Lost on iTunes before you find your desk"

The problems being:

1) Lost is not available in the iTunes NZ store
2) Downloading it from the US iTunes store is against Apple's T&C's
3) Its 3 years old and who wants to download it ayway?
4) Do you REALLY want to waste mobile bandwidth doing this?
5) There are always hot-desks available

(The last one is a bit off topic, but then again I don't think this thread has a central topic!)
