So if you try to email me a particular attachment, Google Hosted Apps rejects it - Xtra tells the user that my mailbox is actually full. Not helpful...

Bad encoding? have you tried from a difference client with different encoding?

Are you sending a .vbs file?

Try Zipping the VB code first.

As the text says it has detected an illegal attachment.

I think the OPs issue is more with telecom's mail system bouncing the message saying the mailbox is full, which is wrong, it's not going to tell the sender to fix the attachment.

Understand the top part of the message and sometimes that is a generic bounce bit, the actual error that Exchange Admins look for is the second bit in red that says about the attachement

Gmail won't accept these types of files even if they are sent in a zipped (.zip, .tar, .tgz, .taz, .z, .gz, .rar) format. If this type of message is sent to your Gmail address, it is bounced back to the sender automatically.

Mac users: Are you trying to send a zip file within another zip file? Please note that when sending a zip file which also contains another zip file, this increases your chances of file corruption. Please decompress all files first and create only one zip file.

I also stand corrected about not zipping it either as looks like google have changed that as well.

The mailbox full message was generated by an Exchange server. No?

Can we see some more headers?

Actually, it's because Google returns the wrong SMTP error code for "illegal attachments". 552 according to the RFC means "requested action not taken, storage space exceeded". So Exchange is quite correct to state that your mailbox is full, because that's what Google told it!

Shows how I just straight away assumed it was a Telecom issue
