So someone from Telecom just called me, and offered me a one-off credit of $32 on my account if I chose to stay on the current plan and lock myself into a new 12 month contract with no other changes or benefits. I signed up to XT on day one, so I've been off-contract for quite some time.

Now, either I've grossly misinterpreted what they were offering, or this seems like one of the worst incentives ever.

I guess if you were planning to stay anyway, then it's $32 for doing absolutely nothing.

Pretty random amount though.

$32 lock in for a 12 month contract? Seriously?

Given that 2Degrees offer a plan with more than twice as much of everything (calls/texts/data) for $1 less a month, and I've finally checked to see that yes, their 3G coverage works for me where needed, then unless Telecom pull something out of the hat pretty soon, it's not looking very likely. The plans seem to be pretty stagnant.

You should get a free phone for that...

Odd call from Telecom.
Definitely NOT an incentive but rather demotivated people from staying on, the offer is so non sensical.

Interesting how we all love to hate Telecom.

You would think they could do better than that! They offer a minimum of $80 and up to $800 for a customer migrating to XT. I know that is gaining a new customer - but keeping an existing customer must always cost less than establishing and setting up a new one.

I suspect the $32 may have effectively been a "new phone subsidy" in lieu of actually _getting_ a new phone, although the number still doesn't add up, and I bought a new one about 6 months back so I don't need another for at least another 2-3 months...

http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/mobile/plansandpricing/paymonthly/

the standard subsidy for a 12 month contract on the $30 plan is $30

Assuming the OP is on the $30 plan then this would be the normal offer and identical to what new customers would get.  Not sure why the extra $2 is thrown in though. odd.

the equivalent 'bonus' on 2degrees is $45 (on the $29 plan for a 12 month contract)

I can't see a $30 plan on vodafone, but their smart $45 only offers $5 per month for a 12 month contract for a total of $60 incentive for a contract. (but bear in mind the plan to get that subsidy is $45, not $30)

I see. A 1/12 discount... Not much, but again I pay more than $100 a month for services anyway, so a $30 discount in a year would be nothing really.
