So I spoke to someone at Telecom, who told me my iPhone 4S would work on Telecom's soon to launch 4G network. What I'm confused about is, isnt this network going to be 4G using LTE technology? As far as I know, my 4S doesn't have LTE technology, so what am I going to be connecting to that is meant to be 4G?'

Your 4S supports AT&T's "4G" network, but this uses a different technology than Telecom's (HSPA+ vs LTE). I suspect that the Telecom person saw "4G" somewhere and assumed that all 4G networks are equal.

You'll already be getting HSPA+ but only the AT&T software makes the iPhone report this as 4G.

Heh, funny. Like how Apple said the iPad3 had 4G in OZ? Then refused to remove that lie from their advertising when requested by whatever government agency looks after consumer protection in OZ, then did remove it when ordered to and fined a few million dollars? Yep, sounds a lot like that. I even had to correct a PBTech salesman a couple of weeks back telling a clearly ignorant consumer "don't forget the new iPad has 4G!".

Several ways of reading the comment from Telecom.
Sure the iPhone will not use LTE, but they would be foolish not to let iPhones on their 4th generation network...
Maintaining backwards compatibility like 3g and gsm today would be expected.

Sorry you got incorrect info.  The 4S has no LTE hardware and as such will only function on a 3G network.

possibly a misunderstanding of the question being asked.

asking something like:
"will my iphone 4S work when Telecomlunches it's 4Gnetwork?"

could be interpreted to mean:

"Will my iphone 4S work ON Telecom's 4G network?" (the correct answer being"No")

OR

"Will my iphone 4S still continue to work even after Telecom launches 4G? (the correct answer, presumably, is "Yes" since they won't shutting down 3G for quite some time)

He deff. knew what I asked. Because he said it would automatically switch to the 4G network as soon as it launches, and if I don't have coverage, it will just use the normal 3G network.
