From August 2nd to the 6th I could play almost 10 games a night without dropping once. And even in the weeks before that...with few to no drops.

The last 2 nights Aug 7-8th, I can't stay in a game for more than 3 minutes without getting dropped out of the game.

After checking port forwarding and pings ...I checked the tracert - there seems to be rather bad hop of/at number 3 -  932 ms   662 ms   359 ms  122-61-24-1.jetstream.xtra.co.nz [122.61.24.1]. Sometimes it doesn't even get a ping - 3     *        *        *     Request timed.
out.

The next tracert a few minutes later could be as low as 128ms for hop3. Yet the next tracert I do...it will be 900ms or timeout all together.

Tracing route to google-public-dns-a.google.com [8.8.8.8]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    69 ms    99 ms    99 ms  dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]
  2    52 ms    52 ms    52 ms  122-61-24-4.jetstream.xtra.co.nz [122.61.24.4]
  3   932 ms   662 ms   359 ms  122-61-24-1.jetstream.xtra.co.nz [122.61.24.1]
  4    52 ms    54 ms    53 ms  mdr-fid-int.akbr5.global-gateway.net.nz [202.37.

  5    51 ms    55 ms    52 ms  ae4-10.akbr5.global-gateway.net.nz [202.37.244.2

  6    52 ms    51 ms    52 ms  ae1-2.akbr4.global-gateway.net.nz [202.50.232.77
]
  7    76 ms    76 ms    77 ms  xe6-0-0.sgbr1.global-gateway.net.nz [202.50.232.

  8    76 ms    82 ms    77 ms  xe2-0-0-2.sgbr2.global-gateway.net.nz [202.50.23
2.246]
  9    76 ms    77 ms    76 ms  202.50.236.110
 10    87 ms    77 ms    85 ms  66.249.95.224
 11    77 ms    77 ms    77 ms  66.249.95.233
 12    77 ms    77 ms    77 ms  72.14.237.21
 13    77 ms    76 ms    75 ms  google-public-dns-a.google.com [8.8.8.8]

Unfortunately I am not very well versed in this area of internet connection and perhaps there is nothing wrong or broken at hop 3.

If this does indeed turn out to be a bad or broken or router that's overloaded.

Hoping Telecom can sort this out.

Have you logged this with the helpdesk?

As it happens, my home connection shows a similar set of numbers, but please remember that line wit hthe large numbers is only about ICMP connectivity and latency to just that hop.

Try pinging 8.8.8.8 continuously. I've had it running for 5 minutes here with zero packet loss and less than 4ms variance.

Cheers - N

How would I describe this issue with help desk so they understand and not take me through the reboot your modem routine?

It would be hard, but I'm sure you realise that a lot of connectivity related calls are actually resolved by rebooting the router.

At the very least however it will give you an incident number. I am sorry I certainly can't guarantee the level 1 helpdesk person can fix your gaming issue.

As I alluded to in my first reply however, I don't think the hop with the high latency is affecting communication to the target... Do you, for example, experience any packet loss or wild fluctuation in latency when you set up a continuous ping to 8.8.8.8?

ping -t 8.8.8.8

GZ is not the right place to come to first for specific connection help if you haven't at least tried to get a resolution with your ISP (any ISP, not just Telecom)

Cheers - N

Telecom is my ISP.

Unfortunately I don't have the time work on this atm. All I know is that 3rd hop ping is either high and or all over the place or times out. Idk what it means or what issue it could cause or maybe it doesn't cause any lower service to the customer.

I guess it is or was a dumb thing to ask about.

Or it is all part of the same stack if you are getting that kind of latency there is clearly something wrong with the router.

There are a couple of early hops on Telecom that seem to often gives weird ICMP numbers and sometimes ignores ICMP, however if you run a tcp based trace route there isn't an issue or check in game latency there isn't an issue.

Gaming will be be using UDP or TCP like everything else, ICMP results like standard tracert in windows aren't always useful because ICMP is often handled by a different lower priority pathway in "core" routers than UDP or TCP.

What game are you having issues with?

Use the email us option on their contact us page to lodge the fault/incident, you can attach screenshots and what not.. beat talking to level 1's on the phone.

http://www.telecom.co.nz/helpandsupport/other/contact/

It seems to go straight into their ticketing system and there's seems to be a chance that spare more knowledgeable people will pick up the job.

You can also run a tcp tracert on windows if you download nmap, see http://serverfault.com/questions/49235/tracert-tcp-equivalent-for-windows

Edit:

TCP vs ICMP tracert to 8.8.8.8
https://cdn.geekzone.co.nz/imagessubs/8dad5cb2e0c39c0936ec4fc0a2d81243.jpg

Just looks like standard ICMP traffic being de prioritised under peak time load, 8pm on Saturday would be pretty high usage internet time in winter I imagine.

TCP wasn't affected near as much.

Try WinMTR. It gives an ongoing ping/traceroute and is handy for testing packet loss on a given route.

I've gone out and bought another modem, just to see if I can eliminate the Thomson as being the issue. If it persists...I will try doing a fresh install of this game (Company of Heroes) on a spare rig.

It is really strange...it was working perfect for almost an entire week, especially after TELNETTing into the modem and doing adding some cone ports. Nothing was changed in the house or computer it is played on. Cod4 works fine...StarCraft 2 works fine. But COH is getting progressively worse. Over the weekend and today I can't even stay signed into Relic online for more than 3-5 minutes. I also check warning logs in COH. They don't give any specific errors...just connection is closed.

I just want to play the game not do all this troubleshooting =(

But now it is turning into a battle of wills lol.

Thanks for the suggestions...it will certainly give me something to try.

Update -
Installed new dsl modem. So far connecting to Relic online and games with no issues. Guess I will see how it holds out over the next week or so.

Ughh Thomson modem eh? =(

Yeah those older Thomson's seem to have a lot of problems with NAT/UPNP/gaming.
