i am trying to figure out if telecom xtra is shaping http downloads when it should not be. this is an http file download:

Big untrusted .exe (download at own risk) download about 300mb in size

now i cannot download faster than 30kBps on this file using xtra go large plan. so if you are not on xtra go large, how fast can you download this file at?if you can download way faster than 30kBps then we know telecom xtra is shaping http downloads which is very very disappointing because http downloads are from legal sources and it has nothing to do with illegal file sharing so xtra should not be shaping http downloads.

You obviously hate your Xtra connection. Instead of just talking about getting rid of them go ahead and do it. Xtra are not the only ISP in New Zealand.

Exactly. There are plenty of other plans which are not subject to Go Large 'traffic management' policies.

I was getting around 40kb/s on my CDMA EVDO connection. I think one download does not nessecarily show your true connection speed (ie. site issues, speed issues on any hop to the site, local exchange issues, Go Large issues in general).

I just tried it for you. I just ran it for 2-3 minutes. It settled down at about 150k and would take 45 minutes to complete.
I am on World exchanges old 2meg plan. Today has been pretty slow and I would normally expect download speeds of around 200-240 depending where from and time of day. Hope this helps....George

Exactly, you can't bet everything on a single download from a specific site. How would you know if this isn't a problem on their server, or in the other routers and machines from here to that server?

On the Internet, a slow download can be anything.

The guys posting before me a right, there are countlessly many other factors and you can easily choose a plan without Traffic management. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion of Xtra shaping HTTP. The Allot Netenforcer *I think* uses HTB queues but, all the data goes through it so you're data may be slowed (whatever it is) to enforce fair link sharing. In other words it's not shaping, it's sharing.

I agree, but Go Large is an exception to this. How layer-7 filtering and HTB root and leaf classified queues work I don't think is common knowledge, so I sympathise with all Go Large users being sold all the hype but not getting a real (real; meaning un-mangled in this context) Internet connection.

Oh, I am not saying Go Large plan is free of problems - we all know it is. But can't just blame things on a single download... But we have read many reports here on Geekzone (just read the other threads in the last few days) and you will see lots of happy users after moving to other plans or other ISPs.
