A friend has a Vodafone provided Nexus S. He recently switched to Telecom and now says he has no service in Tawa. I can imagine he has no 3G service if in Tawa if Telecom only has 850 and the phone only does 900/1700/2100 but he should have voice service.

I should check but I wonder if he has no 3G icon on the phone and think it means there is no service at all?

Voice also uses 3G what else can Voice use on a 3G only network?

The Telecom network runs entirely on 3G.

850MHz 3G and some 2100MHz.

If you don't have an 850MHz 3G capable phone, you will have very little coverage in New Zealand. If the phone doesn't have it, its simply not suitable for XT, unless you know where the 2100MHz coverage is, and that suits you (hint, its only in parts of some cities, so its unlikely to suit many people at all).

3G is voice and data. Telecom uses 3G 850 MHz. If your friend is not using a 850 MHz capable handset then there will be spots in the coverage.

There is your answer. Telecom uses 3G 850 MHz and the phone does not have it.

Telecom users should always use a 850 MHz compatible handset.

As the others have said Telecom is a 3G 850 network. 2100 is used only in the main areas. Therefore this handset will not work with properly with Telecom's network.

Yes worked it out. I had forgotten that Telecom does not do GSM so even having GSM/GPRS at 850 didn't help. He's going to need a new phone which is annoying since Gen-i told him the phone would work.

He should be able to plug the IMEI from the phone in here: http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/mobile/ournetwork/phonecompatibility/

And most of the time it's correct* with if your phone will work on the Telecom network or not.

As has already been said, it needs to support either WCDMA 850 or UMTS 850. GSM 850 or anything else including WCDMA/UMTS2100 doesn't count and isn't supported on the Telecom network.

* Sometimes it's wrong, so best to check with someone in a Telecom retail store and get them to check for you.
