Lumia 800 is triband where as all the newer ones 820, 900, 920 will all work on 2D/VF/XT

Seriously I would probably buy a Windows Phone 8 device, if you want cheap go for an HTC 8S or import yourself a Nokia Lumia 620

Girl friend doesn't want the 620 or 8s :p too picky! 820 is getting pretty expensive for me (im getting it for her. Not a bday presi so can't justify too much $).

personally I wouldn't buy an 800 because you'll be locked into either XT or VF/2D and you will also be WP7.8 not WP8.0

I've seen the HTC 8Xs for sale NZ600

if you really want a WP7.8 what about a 900?

Well she doesn't want to go VF or 2D, don't know why, but she is pretty set on that. And I'm sure she couldn't see the difference between 7.8 and 8. She isn't a massive tech fan. Where is the 8x 600?

I use a Nokia Lumia 920 myself, but I just bought a heap of 8X for my friends that wanted them, they're nice phones but I prefer Nokia myself

Its not just WP8, all the WP8 style devices are much faster/snapper/better cameras etc

Again I would only buy a 7.8 if it was cheap

I've seen WP8 620 for sale in Aussie for A$299

likely we'll see other cheaper Nokia WP8 devices in NZ in the near future

I've seen 710 cheap for sale at Warehouse Stationery etc in the past, no idea if WP7.8 is available for that

Also check on eBay, might be cheaper than TradeMe in NZ

I picked up 8X for my friends at NZ450

Thats only NZ$65 more than the converted aussie price, but with the aussie one you would be hit with delivery and possibly GST.
